Update: Rufus was adopted! Those watching his story hope that his adopters give him time to settle in.
Rufus’ life has been going from one county shelter to another. He was adopted from the Pasco County shelter last year, but was dumped at the Hillsborough County Animal Control because the owners are moving. his owners said that he is housebroken, trained to walk on a leash, and has no aggression. He is energetic.
Rufus is listed as a three-year-old boxer mix. He is still a young dog, with lots of life to live and many years to grow calmer, sweeter and more affectionate. He is very affectionate right now. Watch his video and you will see that Rufus is dying to please. He is a high energy dog, but his tail never stops wagging, and he is very excited to see a visitor.
But Rufus is on the list to be killed tomorrow. In spite of the positive notes from his owner, he was not good when the veterinarian tried to examine him and he was restrained. This often is the case when dogs are stressed at being in the shelter environment. Events that are fine when with a family member become frightening when abandoned in a chaotic county shelter. Like being on a metal table and being examined.
Rufus is already neutered and can be adopted immediately. But if he is not pulled by a rescue or adopted, he will be killed. If you can save Rufus, you need to email the shelter before 9:00 am tomorrow. Email email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org. In the subject line write: Do Not Euth Rufus ID# A30552236. In the body of the email include your contact information. You must be willing to pick Rufus up before 3:00 pm tomorrow.
A huge question that volunteers have is why, since Rufus was adopted from Pasco County Shelter (the county right next to Hillsborough), won’t the Pasco County Shelter take them back? The Pasco County shelter has a much better adoption rate than Hillsborough and Rufus would be less likely to be killed there. And, since he was adopted from that shelter, shouldn’t he be returned there? A volunteer sent me the following:
“A number of us asked Pasco to take the dogs back. They have little chance at HCAS . They refuse. They say when a shelter takes in a dog it becomes their property. They don’t transfer animals.”
Please share Rufus’ story. He is URGENTLY in need of rescue. He is a dog that the volunteers think would make a great family dog, and they are frustrated that the original shelter won’t take him back to give him a chance to live a long life. Sharing his story with family and friends on social media could very well save Rufus’ life!
