It’s not easy to make a mobile game that doesn’t feel like a cash cow and it’s even more difficult to make a mobile game based off of a 3DS game. However, with the same charm that made it a phenomenon in Japan and the United States, Level-5’s “Yo-Kai Watch: Wibble Wobble” is one of the best mobile games of 2016 and a prime example of how a license should be used on a different platform.
Simply put, this is what solid spin-offs like “Pokemon Shuffle” tried to do with moderate success, just bigger and better.
From the start, “Yo-Kai Watch: Wibble Wobble” engrosses the gamer in its world. It makes them feel like they are playing in the same place as the 3DS game, just in a different way. All your favorite characters and Yo-Kai are there and the puzzle mechanics, which involve you combining little Yo-Kai wobs, which look like little faces of your favorite Yo-Kai and popping them and causing damage on your enemies. If you’ve popped enough of your Yo-Kai, you can even perform their signature maneuvers from the 3DS game. The end result is a mobile game that never feels like one. As a matter of fact, seeing this on a 3DS would make a ton of sense.
With so many features carried over from the 3DS version, the coolest part of “Yo-Kai Watch Wibble Wobble” is that it feels like an extension of the 3DS game. Although its gameplay engine is a far cry from the action-RPG it’s based on, it’s a puzzle game with a panache that’ll grow on you. Befriending Yo-Kai is even easier than in the main game as well and in a few hours, you can have a decent team and one you’ll want to level up.
As a result, it’s incredibly hard to put down. Your wife is going to yell at you. Your mom is going to be pissed. They’ll just have to get over themselves.
The only real issue with the Game, however, is that it takes far too long to load. If you’re not on a dedicated Wi-Fi signal, playing on the bus or the train can and will be an issue. If this qualm is resolved, Level-5 will have essentially little to no problems with the game. The gameplay mechanics are unique, the score and visuals are some of the best on the iOS and overall, it’s just fun.
Thanks to the visuals and score that made the 3DS game an instant hit, “Yo-Kai Watch: Wibble Wobble is just as charismatic but in a completely different way. One of the best puzzle games on a mobile device in years, it’s a Yo-Kai Watch fan’s dream come true and a deep, polished and refined experience that can entice new gamers to the series.
In the end, you may forget about getting your “Candy Crush” on and instead opt for some “Wobble” time.
Awesome Gameplay: The puzzle mechanics are easy to pick up, but the gets challenging as you progress. Again, just like the main game, Wibble Wobble forges an attachment with you and your team in a way that you won’t want to stop playing.
Great Music: Most of the time you’ll want to use iTunes when you play games on your iOS, but Wibble Wobble has that feel good soundtrack from the 3DS title and cartoons that’ll put a smile on your face.
Tons of Yo-Kai: If you have a favorite, it’s in here and if you play your cards right and feed it the right treat, you can add it to your team. Just like the 3DS game, building your dream is an enjoyable experience.
Lengthy Loading Times: Playing the game without a steady wi-fi connection can be a chore.
Thanks to awesome visuals and a great pick up and play gameplay experience, Level-5’s “Yo-Kai Watch: Wibble Wobble” is more than just an enjoyable companion game to the 3DS mega hit, it’s a wonderful puzzle game that can actually get people hooked on the series.
