Spring and summer seasons are coming, and road trips are always a part of family time during these seasons. Many families will be taking a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The 100th anniversary of our national park system will be celebrated this year and the week of April 16-24 will honor National Parks Week. National Geographic is celebrating 2016 as “The Year of the Parks” with its publication of “Buddy Bison’s Yellowstone Adventure” by Ilona E. Holland.
Elena and Christopher take a road trip with their aunt to Yellowstone National Park. Their aunt is a park ranger and she receives an emergency call while exploring the park with the twins. Christopher wanders off and the adventure begins. Buddy, a stuffed bison from Elena’s backpack, comes alive to help find Christopher. Buddy and Elena have 3000 square miles to cover, and lots of sights to see as they look for Christopher. Old Faithful and bison are the favorite sights of Yellowstone National Park. Christopher is reunited with his sister and aunt, and they continue their sightseeing around Yellowstone.
Beautiful realistic photos of Yellowstone National Park are combined with cartoon illustrations to capture the interest of children. A page from Elena’s journal and examples of pictures taken by Christopher are inspirations for children to keep their own journals and photos from a family trip. A colorful map of the park along with a page of history about the park are of interest. Buddy, the bison, is included with fun facts about bison that roam in the park. The book concludes with a list of additional books about Yellowstone National Park and a list of informational websites for exploration. Ilona Holland also includes helpful tips on park preservation and safety tips.
“Buddy Bison’s Yellowstone Adventure” was created and published by the National Geographic Society in partnership with the National Park Trust. It is recommended for ages 4-10, and is part of the National Geographic Kids publications. It has an ISBN of 978-1-4263-2297-6. Additional publications about our national parks that are part of the National Geographic Kids collection are the centennial edition of “National Parks Guide U.S.A.”, a collection of word activities with “Funny Fill-In; My National Parks Adventure”, and “Junior Ranger Activity Book”. All can be found by logging on at www.kids.nationalgeographic.com.
