Sorry for the delay, now back to X-wing miniatures. Wave 2 was released on February 28, 2013. We covered the A-wing and TIE Interceptor, so now we have the first two Large ships. The Millennium Falcon and Slave 1 Expansion Packs introduces a bunch of new Upgrades, weapons, and new rules on how bigger ships work. The Upgrade list is getting huge, we now have Crew, Modification, and Titles. Titles usually add an upgrade or Action and are ship specific and unique; there’s only one Millennium Falcon and she’s a YT-1300. Modifications are universal upgrades which range from Stat boosts to additional action options. Crew are people acting as gunners, co-pilots, etc. Note this includes unique characters, so factor that in your squad-building. Luke Skywalker can’t be manning the Falcon’s guns and flying a X-wing.
First up is the YT-1300, but we’re going to call it the Falcon because this is one of the ships for Star Wars. Part of what makes it a legend is great pilots like Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and … Outer Rim Smuggler (with inferior stats, a fine detail). The ship itself is great, with 360º Primary Weapon (can fire at any ship in range), missile slot, and two Crew slots. You get a lot of hit points, good damage, and lots of options. Example: a build call “Fat Han” was a big deal, still solid.
The Firespray-31 is more a mercenary ship than a proper Imperial vessel. But the most famous is Boba Fett’s ship Slave 1 making it a good thematic match for the Falcon. It’s the fist ship with a rear facing Auxiliary Firing Arc, meaning you can shoot behind you. Not quite as good as a full 360, but handy. It also introduces the Secondary Weapons Cannons and Bombs. Cannons are bigger guns with special rules that I don’t use much. Bombs are fun, one-shot attacks. Every bomb is a little different which can be frustrating to remember. The pilots are decent; three named characters including Boba Fett, and one generic bounty hunter.
Large ships retail for $30. Both ships have good maneuverability and firepower, but really shine with strong Shields and Hull. The Slave 1 isn’t quite at the level of the Falcon, but these are game-changing, iconic ships that . Part of me hopes Fantasy Flight releases a updated Falcon with characters and upgrades from The Force Awakens. Another part thinks that it would be too much remodeling for minor changes like the new square dish. What do you think?
