Rock guitar legend Steve Vai announced today the formation and 2016 tour of Generation Axe, a supergroup featuring Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi, also known as some of the greatest guitarists of all time. The Generation Axe: A Night of Guitars tour kicks off April 5, 2016, in Seattle, WA, with 26 concert dates set for North America. Their local stop will be at the Warner Theater, in Washington, DC, on April 24. Tickets go on sale Friday, Feb. 19. Pre-sale tickets are available beginning Wednesday for those who qualify.
Generation Axe VIP packages will offer fans access to these incredible guitars virtuosos and exclusive one-of-a-kind memorabilia. A front row package, a meet and greet package, and VIP tour package will be available, making this extraordinary tour experience even more exceptional. “The Generation Axe show is a unique performance of five fiercely talented guitar players coming together to create a six-string extravaganza that is sure to amaze and delight,” says Vai.
The Generation Axe experience is said to go beyond gathering five guitar greats on the same stage to jam with each other. Every tour stop will contain an assortment of collaborations by all five guitarists, as well as all of them performing together in one cohesive band. Joining everyone will be a rhythm section which includes Pete Griffin (Dweezil Zappa, Stanley Clarke, Edgar Winter) on bass and Nick Marinovich (Yngwie Malmsteen) on keyboards. Wylde, Malmsteen, Vai, Bettencourt and Abasi will perform songs from their own musical catalogs and join together on other well-known songs. There are sure to be a few unexpected gems unearthed along the way.
Steve Vai is a guitar virtuoso, a visionary composer, and flawless audio producer. This GRAMMY Award-winner has sold over 15 million albums to date and toured the world as a solo artist, and as a member of G3, Whitesnake, the David Lee Roth band, Alcatrazz, as well as with Frank Zappa. GRAMMY Award-winner Zakk Wylde’s career includes a legendary tenure with Ozzy Osbourne in which Wylde co-wrote and recorded several albums, his bullseye Les Paul always in tow. His band, Black Label Society, has earned the reputation as a heavy, bluesy, recklessly-unhinged metal act.
Yngwie J. Malmsteen hit the scene in the 80s, turning the guitar world upside down. Malmsteen’s playing style is unique, guitar playing like his had never been heard before. Yngwie draws inspiration from his love of Baroque and Romantic classical music, employing classical violin techniques including pedal notes, four and five octave arpeggios, and harmonic minor, diminished and Phrygian scales, all flawlessly delivered at amazing levels of speed and clarity. Nuno Bettencourt is a GRAMMY-nominated guitar virtuoso, singer-songwriter, and record producer. He first rose to international prominence with his Boston-area band Extreme during the mid-1990s, selling over 10 million records worldwide. Oluwatosin Ayoyinka Olumide Abasi, also known as Tosin Abasi, is a Nigerian American guitarist and founder of the instrumental progressive metal band, Animals as Leaders. Abasi’s approach to the guitar stems from his passion for advanced techniques and harmony. By using 7-, 8-, and 9-string guitars, Abasi has created a decidedly individual sound.
