The WWE Royal Rumble 2016 results from Orlando, Florida’s Amway Center on Sunday night included several championships on the line. Not only would the Royal Rumble match have a title belt on the line, but four other matches featured singles championships. Dean Ambrose, New Day, Charlotte and Alberto Del Rio would each put their title belts up for grabs but would they walk away with the titles, or would there be new champions crowned? The Royal Rumble results saw at least one new championship winner early on ahead of the main match.
According to PWTorch in their Jan. 24 report, Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens led off the pay-per-view with a Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The match saw plenty of big moves and spots including weapons galore used by both men. These included foreign objects such as chairs, kendo sticks, steel steps and of course, tables. The tables came into play at the end of the match as two that Owens had set up right outside the ring served as the “cushion” for his crash landing. Ambrose shoved Owens off the corner of the ring causing him to smash through the two tables. That left Owens down for the count and gave Ambrose the big win to keep his title belt.
One championship that didn’t stay with its owner was the United States Championship. After the past week, it had switched back and forth between Kalisto and Alberto Del Rio on Raw and SmackDown. Tonight, Del Rio had the title on the line, but his luchador opponent was not to be denied. The two traded plenty of moves throughout and Del Rio looked to have control. However, Kalisto was able to avoid a Superkick late and then connected on his Salida del Sol to get a pinfall win. That gave Kalisto the title for his second reign within about a week’s time.
The New Day was able to successfully defend their tag team titles against The Usos in earlier action. In that match, Xavier Woods debuted a new trombone called “Francesca 2.” The close of the matchup saw The Usos looking to be in control and going for a big move on Kofi Kingston. Big E made a blind tag to get into the match and was able to catch The Uso off the corner and hit the Big Ending to get the surprise win. With that, The New Day has managed to keep their titles once again.
Several matches were still scheduled to go down from the Amway Center in Orlando on Sunday. The divas were set to mix it up as former friends Becky Lynch and Charlotte would battle over the WWE Divas Championship. Also, Roman Reigns would go into the Royal Rumble as the No. 1 competitor and try to survive the match to retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. WWE fans were certainly anticipating these results as well as any surprise entrants that might have checked into this year’s Rumble match.
