From AJ Styles’ debut and Triple H’s capturing of the WWE World Heavyweight title, the 2016 Royal Rumble was an awesome event thanks to the dominance of the Wyatt Family and four fantastic matches before the Rumble.
Kickoff: Four Way Tag: Darren Young and Damien Sandow vs. The Dudley Boys: Bubba Ray and Devon Dudley vs. Jack Swagger and Mark Henry vs. The Ascension: Viktor and Konnor, Winners get into Royal Rumble Match: All four teams had their moments, but after the Dudley Boys had their opportunity to win foiled, thanks to a Patriot Lock from Swagger on Ray, Henry was able to get the pin on Viktor after the 3D.
Last Man Standing Match: Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens: This was a war from the start as Owens and Ambrose went all over the ring and outside. Ambrose had the early advantage, thanks to a Kendo Stick, but Owens hit the Cannonball that sent Ambrose through the barricade on the outside. Owens continued to dominate, thanks to steal chairs, but Ambrose’s signature Clothesline evened things up. Owens then managed to catch Ambrose in a Suicide Dive attempt and then drove him back first into the apron before throwing him into the ring steps. Ambrose fought back again and hit the Dirty Deeds following an Owens Super Kick. Ambrose then hit another Dirty Deeds, this time on a steel chair, but Owens was able to roll out of the ring, onto his feet before the ten-count. Ambrose wasn’t done yet though as he landed a Massive Top Rope Elbow on Owens, who was on a table on the outside. With the action back in the ring, Owens hit his modified Cradle Brainbuster through a table and then followed it up with the Pop-Up Powerbomb, but Ambrose escaped at the count of nine. Owens then propped Ambrose on four chairs and attempted a top rope maneuver, but Ambrose pushed him off the top rope, onto a pair of stacked tables to secure the victory.
WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day: Big E. Langston and Kofi Kingston w/Xavier Woods vs. Jimmy and Jey Uso: A great tag match with plenty of back and forth. While the Usos used strikes and High-flying maneuvers to stay in the match, antics from Woods and quick tags allowed The New Day to dish out just as much as they took. Bodies were everywhere after Jey took out Kingston and Langston hit the Suicide Dive to take out Jimmy. With the action back in the ring, The New Day were unable to hit the modified Big Ending and Jimmy hit the Splash from the top rope, but Kingston got his leg under the rope thanks to help from Woods. Langston then took out Jimmy Uso on the outside and then after a Blind Tag, hit the Big Ending to earn his team the win.
United States Champion Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto: Lots of high-flying spots with Kalisto, but Del Rio was solid with strikes and Suplexes. After he tried to rip off Kalisto’s mask, Del Rio nearly won with the Super Kick. Setting up Kalisto for the Arm Bar, Kalisto countered and then hit a beautiful Tornado DDT variation for the near-fall. Kalisto then earned another near-fall with the Head-Scissor Driver but got ahead of himself when he went to the top rope after. This allowed Del Rio to hit a Reverse Suplex from the top rope. Kalisto then nearly won with a near-botched pinning combination and after Del Rio missed the stomp, Kalisto almost won with the Selina Del Sole, but Del Rio grabbed the bottom rope. After another kick to Kalisto’s gut, Del Rio exposed a turnbuckle, but Kalisto was able to send Del Rio into it with a Head Scissors. The masked star was then able to hit his second Selina Del Sole for the win.
Divas Champion Charlotte Flair w/Ric Flair vs. Becky Lynch: Away from Ric Flair’s distractions, this was a damn good match with plenty of offense. They pushed the type of pace most Divas can’t and were able to trade maneuvers and strikes in a way even the boys would be proud of. After a heavy chunk of offense from both sides, Flair nearly won with the Spear and after Lynch locked in an Armbar, Flair showed a ton of strength with a Powerbomb. That’s when things went sour. Simply put, the finish was a disaster. Lynch locked in the Disarmer, but Ric Flair was able to throw his jacket in Lynch’s face to force her to release the hold. A Spear later from Charlotte earned her the win. After the match, Charlotte continued to beat on Becky until Sasha Banks hit the ring and ironically kicked Lynch out of the ring before she nailed Charlotte with the Bank Statement.
AJ Styles enters at #3: Styles and Reigns actually worked together for quite some time, eliminating Curtis Axel and Tyler Breeze. While he sold a ton during his time in the match, the fans chanted his name throughout.
R-Truth Enters at #12, Brings a Ladder Into the Match: Although he lasted only a few seconds, his entry was a fun one.
League of Nations Beat on Reigns: After Luke Harper enters the match, the League of Nations pull Reigns under the bottom rope under the supervision of Vince McMahon and hit him with Del Rio’s Super Kick and a Brogue Kick before Rusev hit the Splash on Reigns through the French announce table.
Braun Strowman enters at #17 and eliminates both Kane and Big Show.
Kevin Owens enters at #18 and eliminates AJ Styles.
Sami Zayn enters at #20 and eliminates Kevin Owens.
Brock Lesnar enters at #23 and eliminates Erick Rowan, Jack Swagger, Luke Harper and Braun Strowman.
Bray Wyatt enters at 27 and all of a sudden the entire Wyatt family attacks Lesnar. After Lesnar disposed of Harper, Rowan and Strowman, Lesnar hits the German Suplex but Harper hits the Super Kick on Lesnar and Wyatt nails “The Beast” with The Sister Abigail and the rest of the Wyatts throw him over the top rope.
Sheamus enters at #29, but Reigns returns and eliminates Miz and Alberto Del Rio.
Triple H enters at #30 and eliminates Dolph Ziggler and Bray Wyatt (with help from Sheamus).
Ambrose eliminates Jericho to leave Reigns, Sheamus, Ambrose and Triple H as the final four.
Reigns eliminates Sheamus, but Triple H eliminates Reigns, leaving Ambrose and Triple H as the final two.
After it appeared Ambrose had Triple H on the ropes, Triple H was able to eliminate him nd win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
