The World Cosplay Summit has taken on several different forms in the USA. This year it was announced that instead of the multi-convention qualifier rounds that it has had very the last couple years, it would be switching back to a single convention event like it was when it first started in this country. This year the event will be taking place at Anime Next in New Jersey on June 10-12.
The World Cosplay Summit takes teams from many countries across the world and lets them perform in Japan in an international competition that is an event unlike any other. The USA has been taking part in the event for the last several years and has seen great success on the big stage. Last year, the team that was selected went on and performed from “Paradise Kiss” and took home third place as well as the high acclaimed “Brother Award” which gets awarded to the group with the best craftsmanship and has a prize of an embroidery machine donated by the sponsor. The USA teams have taken this award several times over the years.
Teams of two compete with skits that are 2 minutes and 30 seconds long. There are many restrictions as far as prop and set sizes and weights. It tests the teams not only in craftsmanship, but also performance and likeness to characters. Its a difficult competition but it draws hundreds of people across the globe to their various qualifiers to try and earn a spot on their nation’s team.
This is the second time that Anime Next will host the WCS. The first time it was one of the qualifying stops that sent 2 teams to the finals later in the year. This will be the convention’s first time hosting the main national event. The convention is held at the Atlantic City Convention center and there are 3 host hotels in the surrounding area that are already starting to fill up. You can find out more information on Anime next on their website.
The WCS committee has not released the information for this years event or the time frame for sending in resumes yet. You can find more information about the WCS and stay up to date with information releases on their facebook. Resumes will be due several months before the event and information about times and requirements will be announced after resumes are closed.
Many are already buzzing with excitement and costumes are underway as they get ready for the biggest cosplay event of the year. Winners of the qualifier will be flown for free to Japan for the finals where they will spend a week meeting the other competitors, experiencing Japan, taking part in parades and interviews and being showcased on the main stage. The actual event is usually streamed around the world while it is taking place. No doubt the qualifier as well as the final will be action packed and full of amazing talent.
