The word I kept hearing for Word of Life Christian Academy was “Excellence”. I wanted to find out about this school that was so highly recommended. I was graciously given a tour of the facility by Assistant Principal Cherri Savage. I had the opportunity speak with several of the teachers and meet some of the students.
During the tour the teachers were asked to describe the school. Three out of five used the word “excellence”. Some included Pastor David Shearin, all described him as a “man of excellence”. As the tour was beginning I was told about the boys’ basketball team.
Word of Life Christian Academy boys’ basketball team is the NIAA Division 4 Undefeated Champions of Southern League High School Basket Ball. That is a great accomplishment for any team. However, this team of champions only has 13 players with a half court for practice.
Word of Life Christian Academy boys’ basketball team came in 2nd for the state of Nevada in the Reno championship. The spirit of David immediately came to mind. This is a team that appears small but is mighty and victorious.
Throughout the tour I kept hearing the word excellence associated with their Pastor David. Word of Life Christian Academy students are being prepared spiritually, academically and socially to face the giants of life. The school truly has the spirit of David in more ways than one.
The academy is Pre K through 12th grade. Each grade is designed to prepare the students in all areas of life.
Pre K has daily Bible study, weekly chapel, intercession, math, science, English, Spanish and phonics. Kindergarten is primarily review in preparation for the first grade.
Technology begins in kindergarten with Legos and develops into Probotics. The students have a weekly STEM Day. STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. One of the teachers calls it STEAM day, adding an A for Art.
Every Thursday the children attend Chapel led by Minister Scott. Chapel is a combination of worship and age applicable Bible lessons. As the children progress in age their spiritual training adapts with focus on their specific spiritual and social growth.
In 6th grade the focus on leadership training begins. The boys are separated for Bible study. There is an emphasis on relationships. The boys and girls remain separated through the 11th grade. In the 12th grade the boys and girls are joined and the focus is on World View.
When Nevada schools are overcrowded Word of Life Christian Academy has a ratio of 22 to 2 in the lower grades and an average of 15 per class in the middle grades through high school. Once again the concept of small but mighty arises.
One of the teachers said “David Shearin is a man of excellence, prayer and integrity. God said build a school for my children and that is what Pastor David did.”
The tour was most impressive. The enthusiasm and spirit of the teachers was very apparent. I would love for my grandchildren to attend a school like Word of Life Christian Academy. The staff spoke with pride as they described the successes of their previous students.
As I listened to the number of years some of the teachers have held their position at the school and the way they spoke of the students, the Amplified version of Isaiah 40:31 came to mind.
But those who wait for the LORD who expect, look for, and hope in Him, will gain new strength and renew their power; They will lift up their wings and rise up close to God like eagles rising toward the sun; They will run and not become weary, They will walk and not grow tired.
The teachers are dedicated and the students soar. This school gets a five-star review only because the scoring stops at five.
