A 27-year-old Jonesboro woman was attempting to walk across a busy Clayton County street when she was struck by a SUV and left to die on the side of the road Friday night. On Saturday, police said they were still searching for the vehicle and the driver who struck her.
Around 6:50 p.m. officers responded to the area of Tara Boulevard, just north of North Avenue after getting a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle, according to Clayton County police. When the officers arrived they found Gayla Murphy laying on the side of the roadway, police spokesperson Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.
She was being treated by Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services. Murphy was then transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:08 p.m., Marbury said.
Investigators later learned that Murphy was attempting to cross Tara Boulevard when she was struck as she entered the center lane in the northbound lanes of traffic, Marbury said. The vehicle, which was described as a black SUV, did not stop and continued traveling north on Tara Boulevard, the sergeant said. There should be damage to the vehicle which is consistent with striking a pedestrian.
