Notre Dame wide receiver Will Fuller is now a Houston Texans rookie football player. The 21st pick of the draft was the first selection by the Houston Texans who actually moved up in the draft to get Fuller. The Houston Texans traded a sixth round pick and their first pick at 22 to the Washington Redskins to move up one spot and pick the receviver they hope will complement DeAndre Hopkins. It was the first time Houston had ever traded up in the draft.
Fuller was the man targeted all along by the Texans but what does he bring to the table. Here are three things for fans to know about this talented wide receiver.
First his former head coach Brian Kelly describes him as multi-dimensional. Fuller is not just an athlete that can run fast although is forty time (4.32) is pretty fast considering no other receiver at the NFL Combine was quicker. He is a football player that can run fast and catch the ball in traffic if needed but especially in one on one situations, His explosive playmaking ability for Notre Dame obviously bodes well for the Houston Texans..As one blog put it there’s fast and then there’s Will Fuller.
Second, Bill O’Brien and Will Fuller have a connection. The 22 year old Philadelphia native was heavily recruited by then Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien. In fact Fuller had committed to O’Brien and the Nittany Lions before changing his mind and heading to the Fighting Irish.
Third, numbers do not lie. In his two seasons, he eclipsed a 1,000 yards receiving both times. As a sophomore, hwas third in the nation in receiving touchdowns and tied the school record with 15. In 29 starts for Notre Dame, he found the endzone with a touchdown reception 30 times, second most in school history.
One would think that simply based on this that experts would agree Houston got their man but not all analysts agree. Some think he needs more seasoning as a player because his pass running is not as sharp as they would like and anyone that can run fast could stretch the field for Houston and serve the same purpose. There are those who feel his hands aren’t that good. There are those who say he isn’t tall enough or his frame isn’t big enough to handle the rigors of the NFL.
But what do the experts know, all Texans fans care about are wins and of course fantasy football points. If Will Fuller produces in the fantasy football leagues, it means a win-win for everyone. Fans will be getting what they expect from a number one pick which should be leading to wins which in turn should be leading to an AFC South title which in turn should be leading to a Super Bowl 51 berth which coincidentally is being played at NRG Stadium.
All in all, football pundits and fantasy points aside, this was one of the best picks by the Houston Texans. They got an impact player who can make an immediate difference. They got a player with a high football IQ despite player and organization having only spoken once before Thursday night’s draft. They got another weapon for Brock Osweiler, Now all they need is a solid offensive line and the rest will take care of itself.
