Educating, motivating, spreading awareness and inspiring people to adopt pets from animal shelters instead of buying from pet stores and breeders is the key to significantly reducing the number of homeless pets as animals in shelters have already been neutered and spayed, unlike the pets in pet stores and from breeders. The overpopulation of homeless pets in Chicago and nationwide is steadily increasing as a result of lost pets who were never neutered or spayed, mating with other lost pets who were never neutered or spayed, consequently creating more homeless pets on the streets and in shelters. Contributing to the overpopulation of homeless pets is one of the principal reasons why you should never buy pets from pet stores and breeders and the other primary reason is the inhumane treatment of animals at pet mills ran by breeders who sell animals to pet stores.
Each year over 6 million pets end up in shelters and unfortunately, more than half of those darling fur babies will not be adopted but instead euthanized, due to lack of space in shelters. There is absolutely no need or reason to buy a pet from a breeder or pet store as animal shelters have millions of lovable pets that need forever homes and better yet, if you are looking for a specific type of breed, animal shelters have all kinds of breeds, so you can most likely find the breed you are looking for at a shelter.
In the United States and throughout the world, it is essential to know that the puppies, kittens and rabbits sold in pet stores come from mills, also known as puppy, kitten and rabbit farms which are inhumane breeding facilities that are only interested in making money. The conditions that the animals live in at these cruel mills are extremely unsanitary due to the overcrowding in wire cages, resulting in the animals having to live in their own feces and urine. The innocent animals at these mills are forced to breed continuously for the purpose of profit only and once the babies are born, they are transported in unsanitary trucks often over long distances to pet stores to be sold.
If you truly love animals, please encourage your friends and family to adopt pets from shelters and explain to them why it is inhumane to buy pets from pet stores and breeders. Let them know that animals sold in pet stores come from an inhumane money making business called the pet trade which includes kitten and puppy mills, illegal international trade in wildlife, illegal breeding and the exotic pet trade.
