May 1st kicks off Celiac Awareness Month and in honor of this important event, Canyon Bakehouse sent their myriad of premade gluten free products to try. Found in stores like Wegmans, Giant, Henning’s and Target; these delights are perfect when a busy, gluten sensitive consumer needs a product that is trustworthy and delicious. Co-founder Christi Skow was diagnosed with Celiac disease in 2007, and along with her husband Josh and their master baker friend Ed, the three began to create recipes for breads that were not just texturally enjoyable but also nutritious and flavorful. Dedicated to removing the threat of “being glutened”, which so many Celiac diagnosed patients fear, Canyon Bakehouse creates nothing but gluten free treasures in their building. Both in house and 3rd party lab testing indicate that their products are, in fact at levels less than five parts per million or considered undetectable. As an added bonus the products are also dairy, tree nut, peanut, soy and casein free. “In late 2009, Canyon Bakehouse was founded, and five years later, we’re happy to be providing gluten-free bakery products to more than 7,500 stores throughout the U.S. We understand the need for breads that are safe, taste great and don’t make you compromise on the quality of ingredients. That’s why we use only 100% whole grains, no GMO’s and ingredients you can find in your own kitchen, such as extra virgin olive oil, organic agave syrup, quinoa and sunflower seeds.” A visit to their website will show readers that this company is very organized and straightforward; everything is easy to find with just a click.
Canyon Bakehouse was so generous to send nine different items to try from their thoughtfully produced line of breads and treats to try. While many gluten free consumers prefer to bake their own gluten free bread, there just isn’t always time and that’s where phenomenal products like these come in. The Hamburger Buns were soft and somewhat squishy – and had great bready flavor; something gluten free consumers generally miss. They held up perfectly to a grilled veggie burger with all of the veggie toppings plus pickles and mustard, without falling apart. Their Plain Bagels, when heated were everything a bagel traditionally is expected to be; toasty warm and steamy on the inside with a great crust on the outside and were versatile when eaten for breakfast or used in place of bread for a sandwich. Astoundingly, their Deli Rye tastes just like rye bread without the rye. It even has the texture that is reminiscent of a loaf purchased at a bakery. Excellent toasted and used for a sandwich, or just with vegan “butter” for breakfast, this rye is so good it’s difficult to believe that it’s gluten free. Before going gluten free, this shopper always went for the 7-Grain bread, and now Canyon Bakehouse has made it gluten free. Both their 7-Grain bread, and their White Bread make an excellent crouton or hold up well to garlic toast dipped in soup. The textures of all their breads are nice and soft, smooth and not gritty and hold together nicely even when toasted without being completely saturated in egg to make up for the stretchy gluten that isn’t there. This reviewer’s absolute favorite in the entire line of products was the Cinnamon Raisin bread. The perfect breakfast addition to freshly cut food when running out to work, the bread has just the right amount of cinnamon to compliment the natural sweetness of the very fresh tasting raisins. Each piece toasted perfectly and was so tasty with vegan “butter” or vegan “cream cheese”. Also tried with local, raw honey as a spread and a dash of freshly grated cinnamon this toasted bread was drool-worthy. There hasn’t been a cinnamon raisin product on the market that this writer has tried which has been so remarkably like regular bread that a person who isn’t gluten free tried it and could not tell the difference. That says a lot! And without all kinds of ingredients that aren’t necessary in breads, this is a line of products that don’t feel or taste like processed junk. Their Rosemary and Thyme Foccaccia bread made delicious gluten free bread sticks, dipped in extra virgin olive oil as the choice accompaniment. And finally, for those with a sweet tooth Canyon Bakehouse offers 100% whole grain Brownie Bites already perfectly portioned for a quick and easy dessert. Chocolatey but not too sweet, these bites are mostly the best part of the brownie…the chewy and sometimes crunchy edge!
