The whirlwind of dog events happening in New York City for the 140 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show begins tomorrow night with the NYC Pet Fashion Show held at the Hotel Pennsylvania to benefit the Mayor’s Alliance of New York. People and pet clothing designers come from all across the country and world to be at this annual event – which seems to get more and more buzz and attendees each year.
Many Long Island dogs and their owners will be there strutting their stuff down the runway or watching and mingling with the crowd. This year’s theme is the ’80’s – so if your so inclined to dress up in that era – you will be in good company. (I will skip the 1980’s dress up part, but can’t wait to see everyone there!)
On Saturday, this year Westminsters rolls out a new name, ‘Meet & Compete’ for the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) ‘Meet the Breeds’ held at Pier 92 and the 3rd Annual Masters Agility Championship takes place at Pier 94. (You can walk in-between both piers via an outdoor enclosed walkway – but I believe ticket sales are different for both – visit their website for ticket info).
Watching the dogs, mixed breeds and purebred of all ages compete in this agaility competition is definitely worth the trek into NYC. This will be my 3rd year attending and if you love dogs like I do – you don’t want to miss this. We are so fortunate to just be able to jump on a train to attend this as dogs from across the US will be there competeing. I will be routing for local Doberman Margot to win!
Then on Monday and Tuesday, the dog show takes place – held at Piers 92/94 during the day, and at night at Madison Square Garden – if you have never been to Westminster and can attend – there is nothing else like it. You will see so many breeds of dogs in once place you will be in puppy love overdrive.
A couple tips: always ask the owner/handler if you can pet the dog – many dogs have just gone through much grooming before they enter the ring and you would want to be the person messing up their blowout! ;)
Wear comfortable shoes – there is a decent amount of walking during the day at the piers.
Oh and you cannot bring you own dog to attend (wish I could bring my Cody – he would love it!). Most of all enjoy the dogs around you, and of course you will want to bring your camera or at least make sure you have enough room to take lots of pictures with your cell.
I will be live Periscoping from all of the events, so be sure to follow me: @AmericanPetPros (on Twitter and Instagram too).
Oh last tip, dress in layers some areas of both the piers and MSG can be warm or cold. You will want to be able to peel off layers and put back on as needed. It is supposed to be very cold this Saturday – and while everything is inside, think about that when you’re outside!
