There are much easier professions to choose from than that of an actress and ‘Waiting for Johnny Depp’ definitely proves that point. At the same time, this one woman show will have you laughing out loud and even dancing in your seats, as you go on New York actress Rita Donatella’s (the super talented Deedee O’ Malley) quest to land a starring role in a Johnny Depp film. Rita will do anything to land the part including reinventing herself over and over again.
‘Waiting for Johnny Depp’ is inspired by true events in the lives of the creators, Deedee O’Malley, an award winning actor, former Motown songwriter and scriptwriter, Janet Cole Valdez and award winning composer Bettie Ross. Rita’s full name, which she takes great joy in repeating, is Rita Sophia Adelina Donatella Zeitz. She was born in Brooklyn, coincidentally on the same day that ‘Like a Virgin’ became number 1 on the charts. From a very young age, Rita knew that one day, she would become a star despite her mother’s belief to the contrary. But just in case mama was right, Rita got a degree in biology, followed by a nice safe job with an insurance plan. But one day everything changed. Rita found out that she landed a starring role opposite Johnny Depp and she did what any practical woman would do; quit her job and tell her boss to ‘kiss her ass.’ Goodbye financial security. Hello to stardom. Hmm, not quite In fact, this is proven over and over again, as we go on Rita’s super funny as well as super touching journey to fulfill her dreams.
We watch Rita experience depression, frustration, disappointment after disappointment, all the while singing her heart out (to clever edgy songs) and never losing her sense of humor. Rita is a woman that does not give up no matter how many times she falls down and that’s why we can’t help but love her. Miss O’Malley plays several parts including the voice of her mother, as well as her brother. Their duet together is absolutely beautiful. Did I mention that O’Malley is a killer singer with great comic timing? Well she is.
‘Waiting for Johnny Depp’ is a one woman show that everyone, no matter what their occupation, can relate to. It’s about going after your dreams, never losing your passion and finally the realization about what is really important in life. Do not miss this fabulous show.
