Good news for fans of the quirky, Bay Area-based Virgin America (or Elevate Members), the carrier announced today Feb. 2 that it is launching flights from LAX to Honolulu starting May 5 and to Maui on June 14, 2016. Not only that but in honor of the occasion the airline is offering a cheap ticket to paradise for just $169 one way fare. The daily, nonstop flights will be operated on Virgin’s new Airbus A320 aircraft. Virgin America currently flies to Oahu and Maui from San Francisco. The expanded Hawaii routes will also benefit East Coast passengers with connections between Maui and Newark Liberty International, Washington Dulles International Airport and Boston Logan International. There will also be connections to San Diego International Airport, Dallas Love Field, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. “Since we launched our Hawai’i service last year, we’ve seen firsthand why it is one of the most popular leisure destinations among West Coast travelers. The guest response to our new routes has been extremely positive, which is why we are so pleased to announce that we are expanding our nonstop service to the Los Angeles market,” said Virgin America president and Chief Executive Officer, David Cush. “This new service from LAX not only brings this world class destination to our guests and Elevate members in the Los Angeles area, it opens up a number of round trip connecting flights to markets across the country.”

“Virgin America is providing more airline choice and competition to our great state, and we could not be more pleased that they are already adding more routes to the Hawaiian Islands from Los Angeles – our largest originating travel market,” said Governor David Ige. “We look forward to Virgin America’s continued growth and success in serving travelers visiting the Islands.”
“The addition of more seats flying direct between Los Angeles and Honolulu and Los Angeles and Kahului will not only expand the availability to more islands, but provide our visitors with another excellent airline option. We are thrilled to have this easy access for both visitors and residents flying between the West Coast and Hawai’i,” said George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawai’i Tourism Authority.
Flights from LAX to Hawaii on May 5, 2016 will depart at 10:35 a.m. and 1:25 p.m. daily and return from Honolulu at 2:225 p.m. and 10:55 p.m. daily. Maui flights from LAX will depart starting June 14, 2016 at 9:35 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. and return from Maui at 1:40 p.m. and 9:55 p.m. daily.
Virgin America’s entry into the Hawaii market from Los Angeles is bound to heat up competition with Hawaiian, Delta and United—three of the most popular carriers for that route.
