In Greenville, North Carolina, a photo of a man dangling a puppy from its collar and walking through the local PetSmart store went viral late last week, with advocates everywhere scrambling to find out exactly where the obvious animal abuse had taken place. Even worse, people wondered how the staff at the store just stood by and allegedly never stopped the man.
According to the Pitt County Sheriff’s’ Facebook page, the photo was taken last Tuesday and posted on Facebook the next day by Tammy Mitchell Whaley; the disturbing picture immediately ignited a firestorm of criticism as the comment below the photo stated: “He put the dog on the conveyor belt to have the harness rang up. This is suppose to be a place of business that cares and supports animals?” When a friend asked the employee why she didn’t report the incident, the employee admitted she was too afraid of losing her job.
Pitt County Sheriff Neil Elks thanked the community for reporting the abuse, stating: “Thank you for caring about our community and the people and creatures that live here. We have gotten other messages from you, the concerned public, and want you to know that this behavior is disturbing to us, as well. Because the location is in Greenville city limits, the sheriff has directed the witness to contact Greenville Animal Control.” A phone call to PetSmart asking for a statement about this disturbing event has not been returned.
