The Veterans Outreach Center on South Avenue in Rochester is one of the most remarkable organizations on the face of the Earth. Rochester’s Veteran’s Outreach Center has been serving veterans for 42 years, and the VOC does for veterans what the VA should do, but doesn’t.
The VOC was founded in 1973 by local Vietnam Veterans. Today, the Veterans Outreach Center continues to offer a comprehensive portfolio of supportive services designed to meet the needs of veterans and their families. The Veterans Outreach Center provides comprehensive services to current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families through direct service, community collaboration, and advocacy.
The services offered by the VOC include: benefits counseling, education benefit counseling, employment and job training, financial counseling, housing and temporary financial assistance, legal counseling, residential and substance abuse services, veteran to veteran partnerships, wellness and creative arts therapy. Through the generosity of the Rochester area community, all of these programs and services are provided free of charge.
But the VOC needs your help and has issued the following call for volunteers. You don’t have to be a Vietnam Veteran or a veteran to help. All you have to do is want to support the troops. Here is the call for volunteers that the Veterans Outreach Center just issued.
Calling All Volunteers We need your help
Operation Welcome Home:
Operation Welcome Home has been a program designed to welcome home our heroes. Veterans Outreach Center has been helping to promote the program for several years. We invite all volunteers to attend the homecoming to provide their support to the returning military. The Veterans Outreach Center is seeking additional volunteers to help facilitate the group’s activities and are willing to be an additional point of contact for the team. This will include:
- Pre-flight arrival: Acquiring welcome home packet(s) from our coordinator, located at: 90 Goodway Drive, # 2, Rochester, NY
- Day of Homecoming: Attending the homecoming at the airport, picking up parking passes from the airport contact, distributing the passes to additional volunteers who attend the homecoming, introducing yourself to the other volunteers and the family of the solider, and handing the packet to the soldier upon arrival, while saying “Thank you for your service and welcome home”.
- Check the flight status online.
- Feel free to bring flags, homemade welcome home/thanks for your service banners, etc.
“Thank you for your service and welcome home.”
