Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and what could be cuter than these mini heart shaped cakes? Make them with a red velvet cake recipe or delicious devil’s food cake recipe, then frost with homemade vanilla buttercream frosting and decorate with your own Valentine’s Day sayings.
How To Make Valentine’s Day Mini Heart Shaped Cakes
First, you need a heart shaped pan to make these mini heart shaped cakes. Wilton makes a great non-stick pan that makes six heart shaped cakes at a time.
Next, you need cake batter and frostings. Everyone loves chocolate with vanilla buttercream, but they’ll taste delicious in all flavors, including yellow cake and coconut cake with coconut frosting.
Decorations include sprinkles, dragees, different shade cake colors in reds, pinks and purples, Valentine’s candies like red-hots, conversation hearts, Hershey’s Chocolate Kisses, plastic novelties like red hearts and cupids, etc.
Pick out the cake recipe of your choice. Bake it according to the directions. Mini heart cakes done in the Wilton pan take between 15 and 20 minutes. Every recipe is different, so be sure to stick a toothpick in the cakes at about 15 minutes. They’re done when the pick comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely on wire racks.
Make the frosting. White buttercream frosting shows off the colored piping better, but chocolate frosting also looks striking and gives a dramatic presentation. Put a little bit aside for each color.
Frost the heart cakes with a thin layer of frosting. Pipe a border around the hearts with a small star tip. Use an off-set spatula, rubber or plastic spatula, pastry bags with small round, star, rose and leaf tips to decorate. Sprinkle with candies or colored sprinkles or personalize with names and cute Valentine’s Day sayings.
