The abandoned Charity Hospital in New Orleans is foreboding in broad daylight and at night it is just downright creepy, say the people who work in the area. A recent Facebook post suggested there is still some life going on within the gloomy vacant building as a Christmas tree was seen lit in just one of the hundreds of dark windows of the washed out arch of a building. Was this a ghostly occurrence or a Christmas prank? The New Orleans Police Department set out to investigate the reports of these lights.
According to UPI News on December 29, it was Lisa Walley Staggs, who works in another hospital across the street from the vacant Charity Hospital, saw the Christmas lights and posted the picture to Facebook. She was in the parking garage of her hospital getting ready to go home when she glanced up and saw these lights.
Like a beacon of unknown light in the dark of night, this Christmas tree was an eerie sight to see for many, although Staggs, who originally posted the picture on Facebook, said it put a smile on her face. Once social media sites got wind of the Facebook post the theories ran rampant. Some thought the Christmas tree had a more human form and ghosts were the next suggested source for this light.
According to WWLTV News today, Mike Arbon, who is a TV viewer, got in touch with WWLTV and shared some pictures that he took of the eerie Christmas tree lights. He said he saw the pictures that someone else had posted online and he just had to go see for himself. Low and behold, there it was and he said, “It’s really pretty and little creepy. It gave me chills when I saw it and, of course, made me think of my brother, who passed away at Charity Hospital.”
Maybe that was the idea behind the lights, a remembrance to all those who had passed away in the now abandoned hospital. The holidays are one of the best times of year to think of loved ones who have gone before us. But was that memorial created by people or by spirits of those wanting to be remembered? That mystery was solved by the New Orleans Police Department after they made a visit to investigate.
According to UPI News, they discovered the source of the Christmas tree shape that was lit-up in the window of the old building. In one of the hundreds of rooms the old hospital harbors was a couple of wooden boards donned with Christmas lights. It is unclear who put them there, but police are treating this incident as a break-in and they plan to continue their investigation. So much for the spirits of Christmas past that this story was winding up to be on social media sites!
