Justice Scalia’s absence has officially compromised the Supreme Court’s ability to defend free speech. As reported by Investor’s Business Daily on Wednesday, a tie vote in the Supreme Court made possible by Scalia’s untimely death has just resulted in the triumph of California’s tyrannical, speech-trampling law forcing non-union members to fund left-wing unions and their political activities.
In Friedrichs vs. the California Teachers Association, the absurdly liberal (and often overturned) activist judges at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals voted to uphold the forced confiscation of union dues from non-union teachers who oppose the left’s agenda (both voters and teachers overwhelmingly reject this). But the Supreme Court, on which citizens and states often rely to prevent the Ninth Circuit’s unending abuses of power from becoming law, suddenly finds itself evenly divided and unable to act.
The result is that corrupt, self-serving unions, which serve no purpose but to make worker seniority more important than performance while protecting the lazy and incompetent from being fired, exploding costs, and absolutely robbing taxpayers blind, will now be allowed to blatantly violate the rights of employees to gain even more power for themselves. Such appallingly un-American attacks on dissent are nothing new for unions (as even notorious champions of union causes openly admit), and are a perfect example of why union membership has remained at an all-time low since 2014.
Unions, which used to serve a purpose before there were workers’ rights and labor laws, now merely create a hostile atmosphere of bitterness, greed and entitlement while destroying merit-based individual advancement. Union members are understandably far more miserable, unsatisfied and disgruntled than non-union employees.
Additionally, government employee unions should not even exist. As even FDR warned, “The process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service … A strike of public employees manifests nothing less than an intent on their part to prevent or obstruct the operations of Government.”
Not only do these self-proclaimed heroes of the Middle Class (whose boundless greed and exploitation needlessly drive American jobs overseas, thereby actually shrinking and destroying the Middle Class) inevitably end up defying and impeding the lawful, legitimate functions of government…but they also illegally hijack the process of determining how much taxpayer money the Federal Government is going to spend. Under the Constitution, that is a right expressly reserved for citizens and their elected officials, not communist gangsters, parasites and agitators (unions).
As this case makes unmistakably clear, the stakes for this election could not possibly be higher. What little is left of the Constitution at this point will be hanging in the balance as the next president takes office.
