November saw the release of the first ever Smuggler’s Bounty mystery box. Produced by Funko, Smuggler’s Bounty is a bi-monthly subscription service delivering exclusive, fully licensed Star Wars collectibles right to one’s door. The theme of the initial box is “The Force Awakens,” featuring characters from the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” motion picture, in theaters December 18.
Smuggler’s Bounty, much like its Marvel counterpart – Collector Corps, is a mystery box service that delivers at least $50 in retail value to one’s door every other month for $25 per box, plus shipping and taxes, which roughly brings it to $35, depending where it is going. The trend established by Collector Corps is that each box, generally, contains a t-shirt, pin and patch, as well as two vinyl figures, including at least one Pop! figure. Collector Corps boxes have also included a Marvel comic book, however, there was no telling whether that would be the case with the Star Wars boxes, even though Marvel produces the “Star Wars” comics (and both are owned by Disney). What was known about the “The Force Awakens” box, however, is that it would contain two Pop! vinyl figures.
At roughly $35 a box, subscribers make up their invest after just the t-shirt and one Pop! figure, so everything else is added value. The boxes are recommended for ages 3 and up. To see the theme reveal for the January “Smuggler’s Bounty” mystery box, continue through to the end of the List below. Now, on to “The Force Awakens” box…
Kylo Ren T-shirt
It should come as no surprise that the biggest item in the box features Kylo Ren, the face of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” This t-shirt is all black with an image of Kylo Ren holding his already well known lightsaber and drawn to resemble the Funko Pop! style. The shirt itself seems to be a nice quality, but subscribers should note that these shirt run big, so select one’s size accordingly.
Captain Phasma chrome-plated Pop! bobblehead figure
This was the item that Funko promoted heavily for the initial box, much as they did the Hulkbuster Pop! figure for the first Marvel Collector Corps box. Smuggler’s Bounty chose wisely here. The figure looks remarkable and really “pops” (pun unapologetically intended). It appears to be the same mold as the standard release Captain Phasma, just infinitely improved with a coat of chrome! There may be some residual chrome powder on the figure, but it wipes away easily.
TIE Fighter Pilot Pop! bobblehead figure
While the TIE Fighter Pilot is not the most popular character amongst the new “The Force Awakens” characters, the figure has a striking visual, especially the red paint variant. Why there are variants in an exclusive club like this, where subscribers are paying up front for unknown collectibles with the promise of getting something available no where else, is still a bit confusing. If it is available no where else, how does one get the variation of the figure they did not receive? Do variants entice people to buy additional boxes in hopes of getting every version?
One should also take care to not vigorously bobble the TIE Fighter Pilot’s head as there is the potential to knock off the figure’s chest plate and hose. In the event it does become unattached, it is nothing a small drop of super glue can not fix.
Pin, Patch and Lanyard
Rounding out the remainder of the first “Smuggler’s Bounty” mystery box are three smaller items. The pin, featuring a bust shot of Kylo Ren, is of excellent quality. These thick metal pins are very durable and look great as well. The patch features the TIE Fighter Pilot and also appears to be of good quality. Finally, filling the spot generally reserved for a Marvel comic in the Collector Corps boxes, is a lanyard featuring Pop! style Stormtroopers. One can likely expect to not receive a lanyard in every box, but with this one featuring two Pop! figures, with one being chrome-plated, it is a fine additional item. It will be interesting to see how Funko rounds out the boxes in future installments. Variety is certainly welcome.
