The Twin Tiers Five Rivers (TTFR) chapter of IFFF has announced that it will be holding its 9th Annual Fly Fishing Academy the day after this year’s Opening Day of trout season. The day-long fly fishing course will be offered on Saturday, April 2, at the Campbell-Savona High School. Aimed at helping beginners and experienced fly fishers alike, the course is open to adults and youth 11 years and older.
‘Fly Fishing Academy’ is a good description of this fly fishing class, based on the depth of instruction attendees will receive. The Fly Fishing Academy hosts members and fly fishing experts who staff the one day course, bringing over 200 years of fly fishing experience to help anglers – novice to experienced – to learn and have fun. Twin Tier Five Rivers Chapter President, Kirk Klingensmith has been lead instructor for the Fly Fishing Academy for the last 8 years. And member Chas Elliot leads the casting staff as an IFFF Certified Casting Instructor.
The full day academy is designed to help beginner and intermediate fly fishers develop and expand their techniques and skills. The day includes three (3) casting sessions led by Certified Casting Instructor Chas Elliott. Learning sessions throughout the day are taught by fly fishers with vast experience and include fly fishing strategy, knot tying, gear selection, fly selection, getting started with trout and bass, and more. An especially noteworthy and novel approach used at the Fly Fishing Academy is to teach with the use of a full-scale model stream. Nymph, dry fly and streamer techniques are easily demonstrated using this model.
The class fee is $75 for adults (ages 16 and over) and $50 for youth (ages 11-15 accompanied by a paying adult). Lunch and snacks are provided and no equipment is necessary, so there is absolutely no reason for non-experienced participants to bug out because they don’t have equipment. Once again, the first (6) six youth students to register will receive a $25 discount. IFFF-TTFR members are eligible for a $10 discount. Also bear in mind, that club members can pass this $10 discount along to a family member or friend. Space is limited, so early sign-up for this class is encouraged. Students must pre-register and pay no later than March 25th by contacting Steve Harris at firstname.lastname@example.org (607-973-2509), or Kirk Klingensmith at email@example.com (607-346-7189).
The Twin Tiers Five Rivers chapter of the International Federation of Fly Fishers is a national non-profit organization. Proceeds from this class support local conservation and outdoor education projects. Novice or darn good fly fisher – this course offers a great opportunity to get started in the sport, or to shake off the arm rust before the opening of the fly fishing season. Be sure to register if you want to kick-start your fly fishing for 2016!
