In case you live under a yuge rock and missed it, Donald Trump will be skipping the GOP debates tonight because he is afraid of getting asked tough questions by Megyn Kelly. What he will be doing instead is hosting an alternate event in order to try to compete with the other candidates. While it remains to be seen whether or not his rating will trump theirs, the stunt has The Donald showing his true colors once more.
Once considered a joke candidate, he is now the Republican front runner by a wide margin. While his opponents run on ideas and philosophies (whether you agree with them or not) Trump has made a splash by appealing to raw emotion and ignorance, with only the wing of the party who pride themselves on ignorance and backwardness supporting him. He said as much himself last week when he claimed he could shoot somebody in broad daylight and not lose a single supporter.
While there may be some truth to that (hell, look how many supporter Hillary Clinton still has despite her slew of questionable activities), the fact is that he was flat out calling his supporters foolish and brainwashed — and they applauded him for it. He is a worshiper of power and money, yet his largest base of support comes from Christians. In short, his candidacy makes no sense to any rational person, but he still keeps coming out on top.
Tonight’s event is being promoted as a way to raise money for the troops, although the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America issued a statement saying that they want no part of Trump’s latest political stunt and will decline any money raised, preferring strong policies over theatrics.
But while Trump is being harangued for skipping the debate by his detractors, his supporters have been quick to point out that Ronald Reagan also passed on the 1980 debate and went on to win that election in one of the largest landslides in American history. Of course, they ignore the fact that Reagan almost immediately regretted the decision and that the circumstances were far different than they are today, but since this is Trump supporters we are talking about, facts and logic are beside the point.
So while the sensible Republicans all tune in to watch legitimate candidates with ideas and philosophy to back up their reasoning (and Dr. Ben Carson too), many will switch over to watch a racist narcissist bloviate about how terrible brown people are. And the rest of the world will continue to scratch their collective heads and wonder at the phenomenon that is Donald Trump, half laughing and half terrified that he could actually gain power.
