After protesters blocked the main road leading to a Donald Trump campaign rally today in Fountain Hills, Arizona, the Arizona Department of Public Safety has said that they are “ready for anything”, including attempts to block traffic in Tucson, Arizona. We’d like to say thank you to the Tucson Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) for being willing to answer questions regarding civil disobedience at Trump’s scheduled campaign appearance this afternoon in Tucson, at the Tucson Convention Center.
Sources inside the Tucson Police Department (TPD) have said that they will take “all necessary actions” in order to keep the streets of Tucson flowing smoothly, no matter what part of the city protesters move through. Protesters are asked to remain out of the street and to avoid any civil disobedience actions that disrupt the flow of traffic within the city limits of Tucson.
Officials with the AZDPS and the TPD have said that they are very prepared for the protesters, and were not anticipating that the protests would turn violent, but a TPD officer, who asked not to be named, said that he was prepared for anything, and would be ready no matter what happens with protests in the city today. Campaign organizers with Donald Trump have been receiving non-stop information regarding the Tucson Convention Center, and have been in contact with local law enforcement. The U.S. Secret Service is cooperating with local and state police to ensure that the rally is peaceful and goes forward without incident.
It becomes a concerning matter when people are willing to violate the law just to prevent others from exercising their constitutional rights to assemble peaceably, and to free speech. Trump’s supporters should be able to enter and exit from the convention center without being physically or verbally assaulted when they are only trying to attend a campaign rally from a politician they want to meet and hear from.
Law enforcement has a duty to keep the streets of Tucson peaceful, and to arrest protesters who don’t want to comply with the law. There have been plenty of warnings issued to protesters multiple times at other Trump rallies, and it just does not seem to make any difference to the protesters. They continue to act as if it is okay to violate our laws and trample the rights of those who do not agree with them.
The majority of protesters in Tucson today are expected to be illegal immigrants, social activists, supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and various left wing political groups. We offer our hope that both supporters and protesters of Donald Trump will remain peaceful before, during, and after Trump’s rally today.
If you are a U.S. citizen, you have a right to protest but not to violate laws when you do so. The responsibility for keeping a protest safe and free from violence begins and ends with the protest organizers. Let’s hope that cooler heads prevail and that everyone’s civil rights are protected; unlike what happened in Fountain Hills earlier today.
