You’ve heard about Americans going outside the country to get plastic surgery on the cheap? Seems a little odd and maybe even a little risky. The reason being we are lucky to live in a country with some of the best Doctors in the world. The CDC estimates up to 750,000 US residents leave the country every year for medical treatments with the most common procedures involving cosmetic surgery, dentistry, and heart surgery. We also know the doctors in the US are governed by certain laws and must carry certain insurance policies. So if anything wouldn’t people from other countries actually be flocking here for medical treatment?
Dr. Dmitri Alden says he is indeed seeing an increasing number of patients coming to America for quality healthcare. The New York City-based Doctor, a highly regarded specialist in cancer surgery, says patients are traveling from all over the globe for his services.
Having completed his post-doctoral training in Moscow, Russia, Nantes, with postgraduate training in Paris and full residency training in NYC, Dr. Alden is familiar with the international population and the need for these patients’ to access quality healthcare. Dr. Alden has become an advocate for serving international patients through his practice in New York.
As a leader in this growing trend of international medicine, Dr. Alden says the business of international medicine is now something that is growing. He says:
“Today, I get daily inquiries from patients living in other countries seeking better care in the US. I see patients from UK, Canada, Russia, India, Egypt, UAE and Brazil to name a few. The common reason for coming to US for treatment among these patients the fact that state of the art treatment is not available or not immediately accessible because of long waiting time such as it is in the UK or Canada. Often patients travel with diagnosis of advanced incurable cancer made in their country of origin. Here, my team can often not only offer surgical treatment but with combination with advanced individualization of chemotherapy treatment we are often able to achieve cure or long term remission. These techniques and protocol are the most advanced and not available in many other countries.”
Dr. Alden even has a page on his website to help assist patients with travel arrangements.
Just remember if you are seeking medical care in the US or outside check reviews, references and do your homework. A procedure that is just $1500 in India, but $20,000 may sound like a good deal, but it could be too good to be true. Also if you travel outside the country you have to factor in the price of a flight, hotel room, cabs, food and any other incidentals. You also can’t exactly pop into another country and out in a day. There may be a recovery people where it’s recommended you don’t fly. For people traveling TO the U.S. for surgery they may want to explore while they are here. A two-week stay in NYC might be enticing for someone coming from another country. On the flip side though does a two-week stay in a small town in a foreign country sound good to you? Probably not.
