A Tornado Watch has been expanded into central Maryland until 11 p.m. this evening. The watch covers Baltimore, Washington DC, Annapolis, Chestertown, Westminster, Bel Air, and Easton in Maryland as well as York, Lancaster, and Philadelphia in southeastern Pennsylvania. A watch indicates that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could spawn tornadoes. Stay tuned to local media outlets for possible tornado warnings this afternoon and evening.
The conditions responsible for the severe weather includes an area of low pressure near Kentucky that will move toward the Great Lakes this evening. The storm system will produce widespread showers and thunderstorms in the Middle Atlantic region this afternoon and evening. A surge of warm air around the center of the Low will push temperatures into the 60s in Baltimore and Washington. Additionally, this will create instability in the atmosphere and set the stage for the development of thunderstorms during the afternoon, some of which may become severe with damaging winds, dangerous lightning, and areal flooding. To the south across southern Maryland and into southeastern Virginia, some thunderstorms may produce tornadoes. Overnight and into Thursday, a cold front will push from west to east across the region. This will bring additional showers to the area during the day on Thursday, to be followed by much cooler air on Thursday night into Friday. Looking ahead, the upcoming weekend will feature plenty of sunshine along with moderating temperatures. Highs will be around 40 on Friday, the 40s on Saturday, and the 50s on Sunday.
