David Baldacci is The New York Times best-selling author of numerous works of fiction including thrillers. He has written several series of novels including The Camel Club series, the Sean King and Michelle Maxwell series and the John Puller series. In his 2015 novel “Memory Man” he introduced readers to detective Amos Decker, the man with an extraordinary memory. His latest novel “The Last Mile” was just released this month and marks the return of detective Decker in a new thriller. He is brought in to help the FBI investigate a case of a convicted killer who wins a last minute reprieve. It holds the number one spot on The New York Times best seller list for hardcover fiction.
According to Amazon, “The Last Mile” is the story of accused murderer Melvin Mars. He was convicted of the brutal murder of his parents twenty years ago and is now on his final hours before his execution. He is granted an unexpected reprieve when another man confesses to the crime. As a member of the FBI special task force, Amos Decker takes an interest in the case because it bears a resemblance to his own life. Both men were talented football players whose career was cut short by tragedy and both men’s families were brutally murdered. In both cases another person confessed to the crime but it was doubtful whether he was telling the truth. This has the potential to set Melvin free so Amos needs to find out who is responsible for the confession and why. When a member of his team disappears it becomes clear that there’s more to the case than just an innocent man being executed.
