If you live in the northern regions of the United States, or in Alaska, or even in the south when it’s the winter season, then you probably have one really big problem: you can’t easily go outside and jog without freezing your butt off. The winds and the cold temperatures are much stronger than your desire to go out and perform your favorite exercise routine.
Not to worry. All it takes to overcome this obstacle is to develop an alternative indoor routine to make up for all that lost jogging and hiking time. Here are five ways you can get into shape from the comfort and warmth of your home.
1. Let YouTube be Your Guide
There are probably hundreds of free workout videos on YouTube, letting you workout side by side with some of the most trusted names in fitness. What’s really nice is that you can take your pick of a classic face like Richard Simmons or Jane Fonda of the 1980s or someone modern like Jillian Michael. All you have to do is play along to the commands and last the full 25-60 minutes that the trainer asks of you. You don’t even have to think—just follow the lead. You can burn huge calories and you get a one on one conversation to boot.
2. Let Video Games Mash Your Buttons
Video game systems used to contribute to a lot of people gaining weight, and to be honest, most titles still do the same thing. But with systems like the Wii and the Kinect, you can actually workout to your video game system and reintroduce a sense of fun and childhood silliness back into your serious adult routine. Games like Wi-Fit, or Dance, Dance Revolution or Kinect Adventures are a lot of fun and can burn off a good number of calories if you stick with it.
3. Clean Your House
Believe it or not, those dreaded household chores can double as a workout. Vacuuming, scrubbing the tub and mopping the floors gives you a full work out and can burn up to 100-200 calories or more. And the more things you do, whether it’s making the bed or doing laundry, the more calories you can burn.
4. Good Old Fashioned Pushups and Sit Ups
This is an old standby and isn’t very video-game generation friendly. But if you want to talk about what definitely works, doing three or four reps of 15-20 sit ups and pushups each day and then gradually increasing the reps will go a long way in giving you a real workout with physical results in just a few weeks.
Yoga is perhaps the most exotic of many disciplines coming out of eastern civilization. While karate and kung-fu do have the more aggressive and Karate Kid style of excitement for newcomers, yoga is more scalable (you can start easy and work your way up) and can also prep your body for more flexibility in general, which will definitely give your love life a booster.
A fitness expert from Power Systems, a leading fitness equipment company, has this to say on the subject. “The willingness to get your blood pumping and your body working is not bound by location or weather. If you want the endorphin rush, if you want to feel good and energized, your body will do whatever it can to burn those calories and keep the good feelings coming through. The important thing is to keep moving and don’t break the good habit you’ve started.”
