Time for the Tony Awards to implement a few new ideas. The Oscars AKA (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) prove that “assigned voters” don’t always represent all ethnicity’s of the artists that are filling seats! The monies made from record breaking box office sales should honor those filling the seats and the pockets of the investors. While the Tony Awards have been a bit better in honoring diversity, it’s still good timing to post the breakdown of voters, with numbers who actually voted. Tony Awards please list and share on social media the “assigned voters” by age groups, men, women and ethnicity. Along with listing the “voter diversity” it’s time to implement new ideas from creditable regional awards like Florida’s Carbonell Awards who announce on social media “recommended productions’ to “assigned voters” and theatre patrons. The leaders of the ceremony chose certain shows that are recommended for award review, because of outstanding production teams or the values presented in the productions. The “recommended shows” give award winning credibility from respected arts critics/voters and help market ticket sales on social media for the arts community and the theatre’s outstanding productions. If a Broadway show was “recommended” for Tony Award voters review, would it lift excitement for the consumer? Yes!
It’s time to be more interactive! We have smartphones and the Tony Awards should create an app that allows arts lovers to set up a profile and vote for a chosen category by the Tony Awards to be announced during the live voting and televised ceremony. The Tony Award – “Arts Educational Teaching Award” for next years winning teacher could be chosen this way. Please announce the number of ceremony voters who actually voted! If they don’t vote it is time for new voters to invited to the table. In a business that thinks outside of the box, the creditable ceremony’s have not used our artistic ideas to expand on the televised viewing global numbers!
If we want investors, producers, artists and patrons to win every award season, why not announce the productions that have production values to take note of? Why not have the TV viewing audience interact live and take part in a voting category? “I’ll be honest Broadway Global Producer of the Year (BGPOY) is chosen through social media nominations, yet the few women investors/producers that are nominated do not represent the numbers of those investing in arts globally. The past four years of our BGPOY winners, who are Broadway creditable investors have all been men. I would love to see this percentage numbers of men and women BGPOY nominations change. I challenge you, the arts readers to take responsibility to know your Broadway global investors! Just as you would educate yourself on a leader for your Nation, State, City or local community it is time to know your arts investors. Let me also point out, with only 40 Broadway theatres the responsibility for “chosen plays and musicals” don’t just rely on the investors. With only a “handful of families” owning the Broadway theatres the chosen productions rely on “owners” of the arts venues! This is also why Broadway Global Producer of the Year can be nominated from global productions and venues, we want to open the eyes of theatre supporters.
Our Broadway Global Producer of the Year must invest in live stage works of art – that are leaving a legacy long after we have left this earth, they must give back to not for profits like Broadway Barks, Broadway cares, cancer research… and must be accessible to social media. After all if a gifted playwright was to reach out to investors how could they get their life changing play or musical in one of our 40 Broadway theatres? Take notice that the film industry now takes film and invest into stage productions, as well as TV Networks that are producing “Broadway Live” productions. Tony Awards must implement new ideas embracing global media. It’s time for arts international language to educate as one global arts community!
Do you see change happening opening arts up to a wider audience through the forms of global media we now have. Even the actors equity union needs to open the box for clever ideas to share Broadway through live streaming while reimbursing the investors and artists that originated the stage works! Times are changing. The industry needs to stay on top of the new forms of media and use it to their value in producing arts! The Chicago Jeff Awards, Arizoni Awards, Olivier Awards, Carbonell Awards, Broadway Global and Tony Awards need to join as arts leaders/investors to meet through live social media, and bring new global ideas to supporting the arts. We are one arts community. The arts are the international language that educate acceptance for diversity, religious beliefs.. bringing Nations together through the humanity of our now global society.
