This article comes from the little salsa room in my heart. It is little but it is there. A little part of my life and a little part of my heart. Nonetheless, still a part of me and a part of what makes me wonderful. So what does one do when they fall in love with someone so wonderful in every way that does not know how to dance? If that person is willing to learn, half the battle is won! Congratulations! The remaining path will consist of much patience on your part as well as your significant other. But yes, you will get there!! And when you do it will be good!
If the situation is of the type where your significant other has never had an interest in salsa nor has one now, be careful. Think carefully. Dance carefully (if at all) and really evaluate if your partner learning how to dance on your behalf (eventually) will become a requirement or something you are willing to let go of (forever)? In my opinion, if you have a sport or hobby that you enjoy that has been a part of your life for years before falling in love then that is not something you should be willing to give up. Hence, you can’t let a relationship change you or any of the hobbies, interests, or passions that make you special! If you feel letting go of salsa dancing or any other hobby you previously enjoyed is a sacrifice you are willing to make, congratulations! Just make sure when you bury it you bury it forever as it can arise later discussing it can cause more grief than anticipated.
Personally, my significant other knowing salsa was not a requirement for me. Not knowing it is not a deal breaker for me either. However, the willingness to learn something that your significant other previously found joy and happiness in before meeting is definitely something that needs a hard consideration. In my case, my significant other is willing to learn a dance he has never cared to learn nor knows if he will even like, for me. I got lucky! And I have all the patience in the world for a heart that is willing to care about the things I care about. And ladies and gentlemen ; it goes both ways! (I have recently applied myself to playing pool, for him).
Best of luck to all my salseras and salseros facing similar situations!
To my El Paso Salsa Family…I know I haven’t been around but I assure you I WILL be back!! Just this time I will be more complete (with my love by my side) than I once was.~Saludos, Vanessa
