To Ben or not to Ben? That is the question. Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, brings a fresh perspective and a dark side to the formation of the Justice League (if you are unsure what the Justice League is exactly, the fast historical reference would be to watch the popular 1970’s cartoons called the Justice League). With a new Batman for this movie, Ben Affleck (enter running joke ‘Batffleck’) takes over the rains as Bruce Wayne/Batman (a.k.a. the Dark Knight). Since Bruce Wayne/Batman was replaced with a new actor, it only makes sense to replace Alfred. Jeremy Irons replaces Michael Cain as Alfred. Henry Cavill (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.), reprises the role of Clark Kent/Superman (a.k.a. Man of Steel).
The cast of the movie is star studded with Amy Adams (The Fighter) returns as Lois Lane, Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona) as Senator Finch, Diane Lane (Murder at 1600) returns as Martha Kent, and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent (basically a cameo role). Many questions were raised by many individuals questioning the casting of Ben Affleck for the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Ben Affleck is a good actor and has played many good parts. For example, that one movie where he plays that one guy, which I think his real brother may be in that movie. Nevertheless, the main point is Ben Affleck able to take over the role that Christian Bale played so convincingly. Which leads to the question, Mr. Bale, why would you do this to us? We were loyal and faithful right up the end of The Dark Knight Rises. Again, to the main question at hand, can Ben Affleck play Bruce Wayne/Batman? Can we believe that Mr. Affleck is Mr. Wayne?
After seeing he movie, I can honestly say that Batffleck did not do that bad of job with the character. I watched throughout the entire movie waiting for some sign that his casting was a huge mistake, but Ben Affleck played a decent Bruce Wayne/Batman. I must give Mr. Affleck credit, he did not try to over act and make it more than what the character called for in the movie. The chemistry between Ben Affleck and Jeremy Irons worked in the movie with Jeremy Irons delivering most of the one liners. Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was just about what you would expect from the movie. Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent begin their relationship without being aware of the others alter ego. Brought together by the evil mastermind Lex Luthor played by Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me).
After two years of subtle hints and innuendos by Lex Luthor, Bruce Wayne buys into the hints and innuendos that Superman is not the hero as portrayed by The Daily Planet. As a mild-manner reporter Clark Kent starts to believe the media and what they have to say about the Dark Knight and the vigilante that many perceive Batman has become. Against the direct order of his boss Perry White, played by Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), to leave the Batman alone, Clark pursues the issue on his own. Setting up a meeting between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne at a party hosted by Lex Luthor. Bruce is on a mission, to catch Luthor and stop whatever it is that he is planning. At the party Bruce encounters Diana Prince (a.k.a Wonder Woman), played by Gal Gadot (The Fast and Furious movies), unsure of who she or why she is at the party. After cracking the encrypted files of Luthor, Bruce finds out that there are more super heroes in the world.
A brief cameo by Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, and Ezra Miller as the Flash, is placed nicely in the movie to set up the upcoming movie The Justice League Part One (release date November 17, 2017). Lex does what every super villain does in every action hero movie you have seen. When you cannot buy off a a few political figures, you set up the hero and turn the public against Superman. So what do you do with a hero when he stops being a hero? You turn the two against each other and see who is the last one standing. A clash of the titans, if you will. So long story short they meet, they become enemies, and then become friends with the help of Lois Lane.
Your basic story-line enemies become friends in the end and work together to save the world from the super villain Lex Luthor. While working to defeat the evil creation made by Lex Luthor, Diana Prince arrives as her alter ego Wonder Woman to assist in the defeating of the evil creature. Neither questioning her help, but who is going to question a woman with a sword, a shield, and a magic lasso (while being scantily dressed). The three save the day with some assistance from Lois Lane, but at what cost does this defeat come? To answer that question, you need to go see the movie for yourself.
The movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was not as bad as some have said about the movie. However, my opinion may be caused by the fact that I had very low expectations of the movie before I ever set foot in the theater to see it. My biggest complaint about the movie would be that it appears that they try to do too much with the movie. The relationship between Clark and Lois, the relationship between Clark and Bruce, introducing Wonder Woman, and trying to tie all of their worlds together through Lex Luthor. A lot of action with a plot that made me wonder if they tried to fit two movies into the time frame of one. Batman, Superman, Luthor, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, and Cyborg. Was it too much for the movie? Are these reasons for the dislike of the movie by many critics? You will have to be the judge for yourself. After reviewing the movie, I give the movie a rating of three stars.
