Among the actors who were feted at last night’s Academy Awards were Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, who have worked together on two important films. Although Winslet did not win last night, 2016 was the year for DiCaprio. But their first outing together was “Titanic,” which won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1997.
A fictionalized account of the sinking of the iconic ocean line, “Titanic” is framed through the story of treasure seeker Brock Lovett (played by Bill Paxton) and his crew, who are searching the Titanic’s remains, many feet below water, for a valuable necklace. Instead, they find a painting of a young woman wearing it. The woman, Rose (played by Gloria Stuart), is still alive and is flown out to them with her granddaughter, Lizzy (played by Suzy Amis). Rose tells her story of being on the ship. At this time, Rose (played by Winslet) was engaged to Cal (played by Billy Zane). She did not love him, but her pragmatic mom, Ruth (played by Frances Fisher), wanted the two of them together as a wedding would fix their money problems. One night, Rose attempts suicide, but is stopped by Jack (played by DiCaprio), a poor artist who is traveling in steerage. Soon, Rose is sneaking away from her first class digs so that she and Jack can be together. Little do they know an iceberg will put a chill on their relationship.
“Titanic” is masterfully directed by James Cameron. The look of the ship is amazing. Also, the second half is very exciting as the characters try to safely get off the ship before it sinks.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are both great in the lead roles. They make their characters likable, and we root for them to be together.
“Titanic” is a must-see for fans of epic films.
