What a truly awesome experience it would be to have a time machine. Just imagine traveling into the future, seeing technological marvels that have yet to be invented and meeting your distant descendants. Or going into the past and actually seeing living dinosaurs and other primeval beasts. We can only imagine what they looked like from their fossil bones. Remember the movie made from the book by H.G. Wells called the “Time Machine” Can such a thing exist? Science fiction abounds with time-travel stories. Man is fascinated with time. Even if we could time travel, are we permitted to time travel? Scientists have discovered that time travel is indeed possible but in a limited type of way.
First of all, it is limited to one direction. It seems time travel into the future is permitted, whereas time travel into the past is not. In principle, it is possible to send a person forward 100 years or more to see his distant descendants. However, he or she could not come back. To accomplish this feat we would have to send an astronaut traveling through space at 99 percent the speed of light, over 600 million miles an hour. To travel 140 years into the future, he would need to travel for 20 years at this speed. Every year he is in space traveling at this speed, seven earth years would of passed.
Second of all, time travel into the future is limited in degree by our current technology. While it is theoretically possible to send a human into the distant future by traveling close to the speed of light, such speeds are beyond the limits of our current technology. The velocity necessary for noticeable time travel requires energy that drastically exceeds what we can currently produce. For a moment we have accelerated subatomic particles through time in a noticeable way, but only subatomic particles. Albert Einstein, the famous physicist, with his theory of relativity discovered that the passage of time is affected by motion. The faster we can travel in space, that farther we move into the future.
Even if man does produce something that can travel at the speed of light, he will only be able to travel into the future. Man did not create time, it is a mystery to him. But not to God for He was the One who created time in the beginning (Genesis 1:1). God is beyond time and could move a person forward or backward through time in a self-consistent way without paradox. He has full knowledge of the past, present, and future. But our human ability to time travel is quite limited. Although we cannot travel back in time, God knew that we would be curious about the past, how the universe came to be, and where it is headed? So He graciously gave us His written Word, providing us the most important details of history and glimpses of the future as well. In this respect the Holy Bible is much like a time machine. When we read God’s Word we are virtually transported to another time. We experience history in the light of God’s plan of salvation. The Book of the Revelation, the last book of the New Testament and the Bible gives us a taste of the wondrous eternal state to come. The Apostle John wrote what he saw from the Isle of Patmos were he was exiled to (Revelation 1:9). He has given us future events that have not yet taken place (Revelation 1:1-3). Also from the Bible we see how all of time past, present and future is under God’s sovereign control. The Bible unlocks the paradox of time for all who reads and learns from its pages when we received the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour. Amen!
