With a little more than a month until the Bonnaroo Music and Art’s Festival usually announces its lineup, they are continuing to lead up to the big day with their twice-weekly Bonnaroo Clue game. These clues provide cryptic hints at bands that are booked for Bonnaroo 2016. Last week, Bonnaroo released two official clues and a bonus clue that was only sent to people who bought tickets through their pre-sale. On Dec. 15th, they began the second week of clues with the third official RooClue. The clue, posted on their official Instagram page, reads as follows: “Demon to Demon, The Antagonist Farewell.”
As is typically the case with Bonnaroo clues, the organizers are ramping up the difficulty as the clues progress and, unlike the first group of clues, this one did not get a strong consensus among the clue solvers on the various social media platforms, but a few bands have emerged as the most popular candidates.
The most popular guess appears to be California-based rockers Wavves. The primary rationale behind them stems from their song “A Demon to Lean On.” The second part of the clue is less solidly connected, with the primary credible guess to the “antagonist’s goodbye” portion is that you “wave” goodbye. It doesn’t fit the clue as snugly as the answers have so far this year, but as the clues get harder, this may be close enough to be correct.
The second most popular guess appears to be alt-rockers Imagine Dragons. They have a song on their first album “Night Visions”, which could refer to the “Demon to Demon” portion of the clue. On their second album, “Smoke+Mirrors”, they have another song called “The Fall.” As the most popular use of the word “The Antagonist” is to refer to Satan, his “fall” from Heaven could make this second part fit as well. The biggest knock against it being Imagine Dragons is that they’d be a very highly billed artists and, while Bonnaroo has leaded Top Ten artists before and even a couple of headliners, it’s rare and even more rare for so early in the game.
Other popular guesses include Devil Makes Three, Gorillaz, and Dead & Company Featuring John Mayer, and Ghost. You can play along and add your guesses in a number of ways. You can play along in the comments section of the Instagram clue. You can also add your guesses to the conversation on Twitter by using the hashtag #RooClue. Bonnaroo 2016 will be held June 9-12 at Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tn.
