The lower gallery of the Watchung Arts Center in Watchung is the venue for “Focus on Still Life,” a month-long exhibit of the work of freelance photographer, Theresa Hood. Currently residing in Blooming Glen, in Bucks County, PA, Ms. Hood photographs landscapes, wildlife and fine art subjects.
“Focus on Still Life” explores the artist’s interpretation of the works of the Dutch Masters. “I have always been intrigued with the still life paintings of the Dutch Masters,” Ms. Hood explained in a prepared statement. “Their use of light gave their paintings a glow and an ethereal quality that drew me in….I continue to discover and be inspired by many artists, including Van Gogh and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, to name a few.”
Like the Dutch Masters, Ms. Hood’s talent is showcased in the manner in which she highlights the relationships between composition, form and light. “I endeavor to give my images a timeless and classic feel,” she stated. She accomplishes this by using antique and vintage props, painting filters, and digital papers and textures.
Some of the challenges Ms. Hood encountered while creating the pieces in “Focus on Still Life” are capturing the lighting and positioning that “one piece of fruit or flower in just the right position.” These techniques allow her to produce images that transcend mere photography. Indeed, they take on a “master” quality of their own.
“When I work on an image like those you see [in “Focus on Still Life”], it gives me a deep appreciation and respect for those artists who have come before me and mastered this particular genre of art,” the artist stated.
A New Jersey native, Ms. Hood is an active member of the New Jersey arts community. She is an online instructor for the Photographic Society of America, and a Co-Manager of the Exhibition Committee for the New Jeresy Photographic Forum, among other positions, including being the founding member of the Hunterdon County Camera Club. She has also been a member of the Contemporary Arts Group for the past four years.
