“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” opens April 8 and runs through April 24 at the Gyder Theater of the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, 8355 W. Peoria Ave. Peoria, Arizona.
The comedic Broadway hit about adult sibling rivalry like no other featured Sigourney Weaver and David Hyde Pierce and won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play. In the story, Vanya and Sonia, brother and sister, have frittered their lives away in their family’s farmhouse. They’re already full of regret and anxious about their housekeeper’s alarming prophecies. When self-absorbed movie star Masha, who is also their big sister, arrives with her boy toy, Spike, a weekend of epic hilarity ensures.
Written by Christopher Durang, the Theater Works production will be directed by Daniel Schay. “I’ve known the work of Christopher Durang since my college days,” says Schay, “and have always been struck by how he combines bold, brash humor, clever satire and a touch of warm humanity in his characters.” He notes that Durang wrote important plays in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, but he believes that “this is the perfect comedy for today.”
Schay, who is also Theater Works’ executive director, leads a talented cast that includes Bruce Laks as “Vanya,” Cathy Dresbach as “Sonia,” Debra Rich as “Masha,” David Samson as “Spike,” Lesley Ariel Tutnik as “Cassandra” and Shelby Daeffler as “Nina.”
