The “Knockout Rounds” began this week on “The Voice” with pop star Miley Cyrus sitting in as an advisor for all four teams during the round. But it was while putting in some time with Team Blake (Shelton) that the country star and four-time winning coach revealed he’d figured out why Miley Cyrus always had her tongue out.
As recapped by Entertainment Weekly March 28, Miley Cyrus stepped right into her advisor shoes on “The Voice,” quickly giving helpful hints in an effort to improve both the vocal stylings and the overall performances of the contestants. When she got to Blake Shelton’s team, the veteran coach noticed that the young singer was a bit garrulous. It was then that he proffered a theory of why the “Wrecking Ball” singer, who has become associated in the past few years with the habit of sticking out her tongue at just about every opportunity, always seems to have her tongue out.
With the pairing of Angie Keilhauer against Paxton Ingram, Cyrus sat in with Blake Shelton. First up was Ingram, who had chosen Adele’s “Hometown Hero” for his Knockout song. After advice about picking his moments, ending the song on a low note, and showing him where he could inject a high sustained note, Shelton and Cyrus thought the singer was ready. Except…
Shelton asked if Miley Cyrus had anything else to say to Ingram. She said, “No, it feels good.”
Shelton observed, “But you had a lot to say.” Cyrus fired back: “I always have a lot to say.”
The mischievous Shelton then turned to his contestant, telling him, “Hey, I figured out why Miley’s tongue is out all the time. It’s tired.”
Cyrus, on cue, began wagging her tongue from side to side. She finished with a full Rolling Stones logo-mimicking tongue drop.
“It’s tired,” Shelton repeated, much to Ingram’s amusement. “It needs a rest.”
A tired tongue? Well, it’s a theory, but it’s not as if it’s just lolling out of her mouth all the time. Cyrus’ tongue action seems to be purposeful, the gist of her message, although sometimes bratish with a lateral protrusion, seems most-times geared toward giving the appearance of licking something. In short, it’s done for effect.
In fact, in a bit of a promo for “The Voice, coach Christina Aguilera posted to Twitter a photo or herself and Miley Cyrus during a day of taping. Bent over a coach’s chair button, both had their tongues extended toward the big red button that produces the much desired turnaround for the hopeful singers on the show.

Cyrus, being ever one to flirt with innuendo, posted a similar photo and captioned it, according to Us Magazine: “”Lickin @xtina buttonz! @NBCTheVoice #keyadviser #season10”.
Miley Cyrus stint as an advisor will come in handy, it seems. Just this week, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that “The Climb” singer would become a more perfmanent fixture on the show. In Aguilera’s usual off season (she’s been alternating seasons since opting out of Season 4) next go-round, Cyrus will take the coach’s seat that has been held by Gwen Stefani for the past two seasons.
