Giving birth is hard. Giving birth while the babies don’t want to be born and there’s a vampire hunter in the hospital is the worst. And that’s what happens in the Friday, Feb. 19 episode of “The Vampire Diaries,” This Woman’s Work.” Plus, by episode’s end, a look into the future teases an upcoming reunion.
Something done well in this “TVD” episode is the brief flashbacks that detail how Rayna became this vampire hunter targeting Julian and the others – and thanks to what happens in the present, not only is the “Originals” crossover set up, but why Stefan is marked in the future is explained as well. Dating back to 1842, Rayna was just a daughter, eager to be a hunter like her father, but kept out of the family business – until Julian showed up, realized he’d be cursed if he killed her father (thanks to that hunter’s curse) and compelled her to do it instead. In order to get her revenge, she was then turned into this killing hunter machine and, through a ritual, given “many” lives in which to accomplish her mission. In 1903, she ran into Julian again, which is when she interrupted Beau’s beautiful song with a blade through his throat and, while he attempted to get away, Rayna threw the sword into Julian’s chest.
In the present, Rayna breaks out of her glass cell and has Enzo reach out to Damon to get her sword back. The last thing Damon wants to do is hand over the sword, but Enzo blackmails him by threatening to tell Bonnie what he did to Elena’s body. Since, as Bonnie points out, she’s his best friend – and only friend, once Alaric leaves for Dallas – he doesn’t want to lose her, he agrees to the deal, but when they show up, Rayna has Enzo tied to a classroom chair with vervain ropes and puts an arrow in Bonnie to get Damon to hand over her sword. And that’s when the real trouble begins.
See, while all this is going on, Caroline’s at the hospital, and those babies need to come out of her ASAP. The only problem is, they really like having her as a magic source, so they don’t want to be born – and they’re not letting the doctors perform a C-section. Valerie calls in reinforcements (Nora, Mary Louise and Beau), and the four chant over her body to draw the babies to their magic instead. But once they find out that Rayna has her sword back, they know she’s coming for Beau. (Once a vampire is marked, Rayna won’t stop hunting him or her forever.) While Valerie stays to help Caroline, even though the babies could drain her, the others flee – or at least try to. Rayna gets Beau, setting him on fire on her way inside, and Mary Louise and Nora run.
Stefan takes a moment to join Caroline in her head for a romantic date under the stars – he’s not distracting her, he insists – but then everything pretty much goes to hell. While Damon goes to deal with Rayna, Bonnie joins the others in the OR with Caroline, but Stefan refuses to go help his brother even though he really needs him. He’s so determined to make things right, Bonnie tells Stefan, that Damon’s going to get himself killed. Once Alaric gets there, Stefan does to go help Damon – and runs right into the path of Rayna’s sword. After remembering his time with Caroline, he also remembers that once marked, Rayna will chase him to the ends of the Earth, and so with a “I’ll see you, brother,” he leaves.
Damon then goes and finds Enzo still tied up in the classroom. (So is it not just Bonnie and Caroline who don’t attend class, but everyone at Whitmore College?) He’s ready to let a coin flip decide his fate, and that’s when Enzo decides to tell him the good news: he didn’t burn Elena’s body. See, at some point, Enzo and Tyler became besties and came up with the plan to have an empty decoy coffin. Their mutual friends have the real coffin and real Elena in New York. Damon calls Stefan with the good news and a promise, to kill the hunter with his bare hands and bring him back.
As for Caroline, the babies are delivered at last, and they’re both beautiful and healthy. But unfortunately, Caroline can’t see Stefan; she can only share a tearful conversation over the phone as he promises to come back for her. However, Caroline does get to see the babies, Josie and Elizabeth, in honor of their mother and Caroline’s mother.
Three years from now, Caroline is on the move with the twins. And where exactly are they going? To see “Mommy’s friend” in New Orleans.
