If you love horses then you might want to check out the visual spectacle that awaits at the 5th annual Red Bricks & Roses Carriage Parade and Festival being held on Saturday, May 7 in Oxford, Ohio. It’s a long drive from Cleveland — approximately 4 hours, but if you are a fan of all things equine then it is definitely worth the trip.
Taking place along the cobblestone historic streets of the quaint college town of Oxford (home of Miami University), the Red Bricks & Roses Carriage Parade will let visitors take a trip back through time as they watch dozens of magnificent flower-decorated old-time horse-drawn carriages and drivers (from the Ohio Valley Carriage Club) in period apparel pass by as they make their way past the red brick university buildings along the route.
For the best place to view the parade with all its elegant horses and dazzling carriages, head for the Uptown Oxford Memorial Park. The parade starts at noon.
The Memorial Park is also the site of the family-friendly Red Bricks & Roses Festival starting at 10 a.m. which features lots of family-oriented, fun activities provided by the Miami Equestrian Team and Lane Library, carriage rides, a display of historic carriages courtesy of the Oxford Museum Association and music from the Worley Boys Bluegrass Band. Oxford museum representatives will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about carriages.
After the parade, be sure to stop by the Miami University Equestrian Center for their Derby Days Open House where there will be activities, demonstrations, barn tours and more for all ages to enjoy. The Open House starts at 2 p.m.
The event will also feature a celebration of the agricultural heritage of Oxford with the opening of the Oxford Farmer’s Market at 8 a.m. where visitors can purchase merchandise like fresh produce, coffee, chocolates and items from artisans.
Hours for the Red Bricks & Roses event are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (festival and parade). Parking is free. For more information about the event, call 513-523=8687 or get online at www.enjoyoxford.com.
