A good question that needs an answer. The Genesis creation account: Does it matter what our children believe? The answer to this question is yes! Because the battle is in the hearts and minds of our precious children (who are an inheritance from the Lord). They need to know the facts about the beginning of the universe and why the Earth was created and for what purpose. Our children are faced today with many challenges to come to faith and hold their faith in God and Christ.
God and the creation account described in Genesis chapter one verses one through thirty-one starts with the very first verse that tells us plainly who did the creating according to the Bible. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
A challenge among children that effects their thinking is on the matter of how dinosaurs fit into the Bible especially in the Creation account of Genesis and other books of the Bible. In the Bible dinosaurs (referred to as dragons, behemoth, and leviathan)(Job 40:15-24),(Job 40),(Psalm 74:13-14),(Psalm 104:26) were creatures that were seen by Job, David, and others. These people were real and what they saw was real. The name “dinosaur” did not appear in history until named by Sir Richard Owen in 1841. Dinosaurs were created on the sixth day of creation along with other land animals and man (Genesis 1:24-31). Marine reptiles and flying reptiles were created on day five (Genesis 1:20-23) and are not considered dinosaurs. The truth about dinosaurs is that they lived thousands of years ago and not millions of years ago or Job, David and others in the Bible would not of witness and reported what they saw. These dinosaurs were not fossilized bones that are being unearthed now but actual living, breathing, dinosaurs.
The worldwide flood recorded in Genesis 6-8 would account for much of the fossils we are unearthing today. The layers of sedimentary rock was laid down as the sediments were piling up over the year the flood was in progress. The animals including dinosaurs who were not on the Ark were trapped in the rising waters and rapidly buried in the muddy sediments. The dinosaurs that came off the Ark were faced with a much tougher environment in which extinction seemingly has occurred within the past several thousand years.
It does matter what are children think and believe about the Genesis creation account. It represents the foundation of their faith in God, our Creator, who provided us the gift of salvation through His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Adults and parents it is our duty as a Christian to help our children to gain faith and hold on to it. We need to equip them by providing them an abundance of biblical creation and creation knowledge through classes that you can help start at the Church you attend that truly teaches from the beginning the creation account by purchasing materials for them to study, learn, and enjoy with you at home. We need to help our children to read the Bible starting from the very first book in the Old Testament called Genesis. The need to grasp this foundational book, after salvation, in order to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18) and to see the beauty of creation. The book of Genesis chapter one will teach them that it took God only six days to create the universe and earth and all the amazing things we see of creation on earth. When they look out into space at the night sky and see the marvelous creation of the universe they can give God the glory for what He created. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.” (Psalm 19:1)(KJV)
