Since its heyday as a 1950’s nightclub party town, Montreal has been a city that pushes social boundaries. No show in town more proudly upholds that tradition than “The Dirty Show,” a no-holds-barred showcase of the city’s filthiest, funniest comedy.
Featuring fresh monthly rosters of local favorites and visiting talent, TDS’s affable host, comedian/songwriter Leighland Beckman and his band, “Aural Turpitude,” keep the music and the laughs flowing, with their raunchy medley of Beckman’s “catchy, perverted songs.”
“The Dirty Show” was first conceived by Beckman in 2014, as a place for comedians to explore their comedy, sans censorship. In 2015, TDS moved to the newly re-opened “Comedyworks,” a club that unwaveringly supports local talent.
Says Beckman, “In general, comedy clubs tend to eschew dirty humor, and some people look down on ‘working blue,’ implying that it is a cheap way to get laughs with shock value.” He strongly disagrees, believing that “dirty humor, when done well, can elevate above the lowest common denominator, can shed light on some of the taboos we keep hidden in the shadows…”
Despite Beckman’s cheeky assertion that he’d hoped “…people would stay away and avoid being tainted by the foulness of his show,” the late night event is a resounding success, attracting headliner comics and audiences alike. The Dark Side has never looked so bright – or so hilarious.
