Most people think of July 4, 1776 as the start of the American Revolution. That is the date that the signers of the Deistic document, the Declaration of Independence, made public and announced to the world their Declaration of Independence. However, the start of the American revolution was in Boston, Massachusetts in the mid-1760s with the Christian Sam Adams agitating and promoting political revolution.
The first shots between government forces and the rebels did not take place until April 19, 1775 at the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. It’s interesting to note that the claim Paul Revere shouted, “The British are coming!” as he made his mid-night ride to warn the rebels of the approaching British troops who were on their way to confiscate the guns and ammunition the rebels were keeping in Concord is false. Most people living in the British colonies at that time looked at themselves as being British. Paul Revere actually yelled, “The regulars are coming!”
Although the earliest known promoter of the American Revolution was the Christian Sam Adams, the American Revolution itself was not based on Christianity. If Sam Adams and his fellow Christians had taken seriously and objectively the Bible, he and they never would have agitated and brought about the American Revolution. This is in large part due to Romans 13:1-7 which teaches:
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Based on this Bible teaching Sam Adams and all who took part in and/or supported the American Revolution are right now suffering “damnation” for resisting the powers that be.
The American Revolution was a watershed moment for the world. Up until that time Church and State ruled with iron fists. After the successful end of the American Revolution, that ungodly and brutal mix of government and religious tyranny was completely removed from the new United States. This freedom from government and religious tyranny would eventually spread to many other parts of the world. This was hoped for by many of the American revolutionaries as is made evident by this quote from the Deist Thomas Jefferson which he wrote on June 24, 1826 which was shortly before his death on July 4, 1826:
May it be to the world, what I believe it will be, (to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all,) the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government. That form which we have substituted, restores the free right to the unbounded exercise of reason and freedom of opinion. All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately, by the grace of God.
What an inspiring truth! Jefferson’s good friend and fellow Deist, Thomas Paine, held these same views which Jefferson wrote of. Paine realized the success of the American Revolution in the field of politics and government made the next vitally important and necessary revolution possible: the revolution in religion based on Deism.
In The Age of Reason Thomas Paine wrote:
Soon after I had published the pamphlet Common Sense, in America, I saw the exceeding probability that a revolution in the system of government would be followed by a revolution in the system of religion. The adulterous connection of church and state, wherever it had taken place, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, had so effectually prohibited by pains and penalties, every discussion upon established creeds, and upon first principles of religion, that until the system of government should be changed, those subjects could not be brought fairly and openly before the world; but that whenever this should be done, a revolution in the system of religion would follow. Human inventions and priestcraft would be detected; and man would return to the pure, unmixed and unadulterated belief of one God, and no more.
Think of not only what a profound privilege it is for Deists to actually be able to make this vitally important Deistic revolution in religion a reality, but also think of what a tremendously better world we will have created once we successfully accomplish this crucially vital goal!
Just as reason and nonsense cannot coexist, so Deism and the nonsensical “revealed”/hearsay religions cannot coexist. The World Union of Deists wins people over for Deism from all of the various “revealed”/hearsay religions by appealing to their reason and love of The Supreme Intelligence/God. This is because all people are endowed with innate reason. Deism connects with that reason that is in every person on Earth. Just as truth never goes away even though it can be covered up and hidden, so our reason never goes away even though the “revealed”/hearsay religions work hard to distort and even destroy this priceless gift from The Supreme Intelligence/God. No matter how deep the clergy cover it up or how much they distort the thinking of religious people, a person’s innate reason is still there. Deism connects with that reason and if given the opportunity Deism strengthens that reason to the point of allowing people to break the bonds the “revealed”/hearsay religions have placed upon them. The WUD has helped people from all of the various “revealed”/hearsay religions free themselves of the fear-based superstitions and dangerous nonsense of religion. You can read some of their stories of how they came to be Deists in our “Why Deism?” section of www.deism.com.
Once Deists have made Deism a household word by persistently and intelligently doing all they can to promote Deism, Deism will render the “revealed”/hearsay religions powerless to cause death and destruction through their religious violence. Imagine turning on the news and not hearing about various devastating acts of religious violence. We can do this as Deists by working to get the word out about Deism.
The age we live in, the nuclear age, requires the end of the ancient ways of thinking being promoted by the “revealed”/hearsay religions. As the Deist Albert Einstein said, “The world that we have made as a result of the level of thinking that we have done so far, has created problems we cannot solve at the level of thinking at which we created them . . . . We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humankind is to survive.”
The more you DO as a Deist to promote the substantially new manner of thinking found in Deism, the more you make it possible for humankind to not only survive, but to make very real progress.
