Hurry on over to the Falcon Theatre to catch “The Complete History of America (Abridged),” a wickedly dark and completely hilarious comedy written by Adam Long, Reed Martin and Austin Tichenor and presented with tour de force performances of Matthew Patrick Davis, Thomas Hobson and Kevin Symons. Deftly directed by Jerry Kernion this quick-witted and wacky blend of storytelling styles, “Laugh In,” Vaudeville and Film Noir (to name a few), offers belly laughs aplenty.
Ranging from America’s “discovery” in 1492, the settling of Jamestown in 1607 and the Salem witch trials right up to present day in an improvised Q&A with Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton this confection skewers our country’s highlights and lowlights (i.e., Native American genocide and political assassinations).
These actors work extremely well together in this fast-paced collage including some very quick costume and props changes (assisted by an agile backstage team).
Highlights of this fabulously fun show include:
The 1805 Lewis and Clark expedition was brilliantly presented as a Vaudeville act complete with straw hats, canes, red and white striped jackets, soft-shoe, banter and repartee; a World War I segment that concludes with a 20-years early parody of The Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” including “revised” lyrics and a 1930s Western-themed radio show.
Recurring use of flip charts were delightful, especially when creating unexpected phrases from the letters of George Washington and Spiro Agnew (no spoilers).
“The Complete History of America (Abridged)” is superb entertainment in large part to the masterful technical and design staff including Set Designer Erin Walley, Costume Designer A. Jeffrey Schoenberg, Lighting Designer Jared A. Sayeg, Sound Designer Robert Arturo Ramirez, Props Designer John M McElveney, Stage Manger Dale Alan Cooke and all those who helped them.
