Imagine yourself in Normandy in a charming chateau on a lake where you can get to in two hours or so by car from Los Angeles. It’s just what it feels like at the relatively new (Oct. 2015) The Chateau at Lake La Quinta–a little yacht club-like charmer in the Desert with 24 stylized rooms and what no boutique-style hotel in the area can lay claim to–a lakeside location with fabulous views of homes and electric Duffy boats that residents ride around in the man-made waters. Add to that one of Palm Springs best restaurants, Melange, warm, friendly service and French Normandy-style architecture and ooh la la you’ve got the perfect spot for a romantic escape. Which is just what the anniversary-celebrating couple did recently.
Our lake front suite came with an inviting patio, a split of French Champagne in honor of the occasion, a king size bed covered in heavenly 400-count sheets, flat screen TV, free WiFi, bathroom with a rain shower, robes, hair dryer, excellent clothes hangers, and amenities. There is also free parking and no resort fee. The patio was perfect for sipping morning coffee and afternoon wine but the lobby bar was equally enticing manned by ace barkeeps. There isn’t a spa or fitness room, but there is aa nice pool and hot tub on an attractive deck with big, comfy chaises and plenty of fluffy towels.
The highlight was dinner at Melange, which, evinced by the crowd, is obviously is a big hit with locals. The meal was a pure taste delight from a Napoleon of Ahi tuna, a giant shrimp cocktail, fresh and delicious sword fish and short ribs—all impeccably orchestrated by Chef Nestor. What made the night even more memorable was the al fresco setting under a full moon that reflected off the lake and a cozy fireplace that provided just the right amount of heat for a cool desert evening.
The Chateau at Lake LA Quinta is located at 78120 Caleo Bay, La Quinta, within walking distance of three shopping malls (should you feel the need for retail therapy and a little exercise). There is a Trader Joe’s, Target, Century Theatres for taking in a movie and other outlets. It is also just about a 20-minute drive into the heart of Palm Springs shops and restaurants.
For rates (which change seasonally and during major Palm Springs events) reservations call 760-564-7332, fax: 760-564-6356 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Although we didn’t get to meet the general manger Chris Chmielak, we heard a lot of nice things about him.
