You won’t hear “Bernie or bust” mentioned on CNN or MSNBC, but the movement to either write in Senator Sanders or vote for the Green Party candidate in November has been building momentum online. Google the phrase. Over a half million results are available, but the corporate media doesn’t want to let Democrats know the golden child of corporate America, Hillary Clinton, will lose the general election if she is the Party’s nominee because revolutionaries will not and ethically cannot vote for another Wall Street-backed neo-liberal for President.
Revolt Against Plutocracy launched the movement last June to build “leverage” from the grassroots to help Senator Sanders secure the Democratic Party nomination. Realizing the myriad of problems associated with writing in a candidate, who is not registered with the state as such, they added “or vote Green” in January. The number of people taking the Bernie or bust pledge has grown from around 3,400 last July to 18,000 last month, but that’s not a story for the corporate media.
Democrats are being given a choice: either nominate Bernie Sanders for President or else face strong opposition from the progressive left in the general election and risk losing the general election. Of course, if Secretary Clinton is indicted for possible criminal behavior on her private email server, Bernie or bust will be the least of Democrats’ concerns come November if she is the nominee. Voters supporting her don’t seem to understand the risks of backing a candidate who is under FBI investigation, not trusted by most Americans and not supported by up to one third of Sanders’ supporters.
If most Democrats continue to vote for Hillary Clinton and she is nominated at the Party Convention in July, not only will the Bernie or bust pledge-takers not support her, many will change party affiliation. You can see comments to that effect on posts listed on RAP’s Facebook page. RAP co-founder, Patrick Walker, says, “Our committee is having a discussion as to when we will turn toward the revolutionary efforts from helping Senator Sanders secure the nomination toward helping the Green Party get on the ballot in all 50 states.”
Many Bernie or busters know what Wall Street’s agenda is about. In the 90’s they paved Bill Clinton’s path to the White House with $100.00 bills and got NAFTA and financial deregulation in return. This decade, they did the same thing for Senator and President Obama and are getting the Trans-Pacific Partnership (they hope) and a nearly complete lack of criminal indictments for the bankers who perpetrated the massive fraud that took place in derivative securities trading. Now they are funding Hillary Clinton’s road to the White House, and will get a president, they hope, who will not pull out of the TPP if it is passed by Congress this year and will continue to push for more of these international, corporate coups des lois. Replacing democratic self-government with corporate self-government is just an unacceptable option for the Bernie or busters.
Nominating Senator Sanders could revitalize the Democratic Party as a progressive party. Nominating Hillary Clinton will, if Bernie or busters follow through on their pledge, see the Party destroyed, not just in November, but going forward. If both major parties are tools of Wall Street, they may as well combine into the Corporate Party. As it is, they function as a political duopoly. You would think this is a story the 24 hour “news” media would consider worth reporting, but the Clinton News Network and MSNBClinton appear to want Sanders’ political revolution buried every bit as much as the Democratic Party establishment does. The revolution sparked by Bernie will, instead, try to bury the Democratic Party in a grave next to the Whig Party if they nominate Secretary Clinton regardless of Senator Sanders’ support for her candidacy.
The revolutionary consciousness cannot be stuffed back into a bottle because the conservative side of the political duopoly is, the people will be told, so much worse than the “liberal” side. Do not believe that. As Calvin Wolf wrote in The News Hub, “An emboldened establishment is worse than Donald Trump.” Trump, he writes, will slap us in the face. Clinton, on the other hand, will stab us in the back.
