For a movie that was first introduced onto the big screen over twenty years ago, the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy has amassed quite a cult following over the years. There are even those who are still hopeful for a fourth installment of the series. While no plans to add new movies to the franchise have been announced on the horizon, there is a new graphic novel that will do its part to fill the void. ‘Back to the Future: Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines’ is written by the movie’s creator/screenwriter, Bob Gale, and includes a collection of tales that were not told in the trilogy. What happened to Doctor Emmett Brown during the time he lived in the old west with Clara? How did Marty and Doc Brown first meet? What happened to Marty’s parents after he left them at the Enchantment Under The Sea dance? These are just some of the plot points that get covered in Bob Gales’ graphic novel. All of these tales are artfully woven together as stories that Emmett Brown is telling to his two sons.
While the storyline is interesting, the artistic style is not one that is appealing to all viewers. While it is colored beautifully, at times it is difficult to recognize the characters. This is something that wouldn’t matter for an original piece, but as this is based on a movie it is often important to be able to recognize the characters at a glance. That being said, this is a fun read for any fans of the ‘Back to the Future’ trilogy.
‘Back to the Future: Untold Tales and Alternate Timelines,’ which includes the first five issues of this new series, goes on sale May 31, 2016.
