The latest season of “The Bachelor” wrapped last night and another happy engaged couple was produced. The 20th season of the popular ABC franchise saw Ben Higgins propose to Lauren Bushnell. The much talked about season saw Ben tell both Lauren and runner-up and new “Bachelorette” JoJo Fletcher that he loved them. Being in love with two women at once is never easy for all parties involved. Bachelor Ben was quick to clear up any doubts about Lauren being the only woman for him. In fact, he proposed to his fiancée twice, once in Jamaica and then again during the finale.
Higgins and Bushnell chatted with reporters on a press call to talk about their relationship, what’s next as a couple and about that ring.
“I thought [the proposal] would be the start of their relationship moving forward,” Higgins said about why he proposed to Lauren twice. “Knowing that Lauren knew of my history with the other women on the show, this was a way to recommit to her where there hadn’t been another woman in my life and for her know that she was one only woman in my life and would be the only woman in my life. This way we could refocus our attention on the future and not so much what happened in the past.”
The ring, which Higgins had his eye on, is an Art Deco ring set with a central radiant cut diamond surrounded by over 240 round and baguette cut diamonds with a total diamond weight of approximately 4.25 karats. This is the largest ring ever presented in the entire franchise of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette.”
On deciding on the perfect ring for his fiancée, Higgins talked of his trip to Neil Lane Jewelers to buy the ring.
“I would like to say that the ring had magical powers but it doesn’t,” he said with a laugh. “There was an “aha” moment right during [the purchase] that ‘this is almost done’ and I get to pick my ring out and who I was going to be proposing to. It was a humbling moment and I was thinking, “This is going to work.” I sat down with Neil Lane and had a couple of ideas of what I wanted. They simply asked about Lauren – who is she and what was she like? What stood out to you about her? I told them that she caught my eye from the moment she walked out the limo and they said what ring captured your eye first and this one that was seemed to be shining the brightest was the perfect one.”
The couple confirmed that despite possible offers to do other things like a rumored appearance on “Dancing with the Stars” for Ben, their focus right now is on them as a couple and to spend as much time together as possible.
Higgins hadn’t talked to his runner-up, JoJo, until that final show when the world saw Ben choose Lauren. Higgins says she has been very supportive of his decision.
“She’s a head space right now where she’s able to move on and I’ve moved on, so it wasn’t upsetting to see her,” Ben said of Jojo. ”It sounds as if she’s doing really well. And we’ll all get to see how well she’s doing [as “The Bachelorette”] starting in May.”
The two women, who were friends on the show and remain friends now, have talked on the phone a few times since and although they were awkward conversations to have, Bushnell says that Fletcher is very supportive.
Higgins certainly has some advice for Jojo as she will try to find love with 25 contestants of her own on this summer’s “The Bachelorette,” pointing out that the show is more than just “fun.”
“I’d say going in and expecting it just to be “fun,” know that it’s hard,” Ben said. “Its long hours and a lot of different things. You’re trying to memorize a lot of things at once but I also think of the opportunity – this can work. I’d also tell her don’t force it. Don’t force love, say open and don’t force anything.”
When asked where the couple would get married, Bushnell says there is chance the couple will say their “I Do’s” in her hometown of Portland. The couple haven’t discussed anything as yet, not even a date or thought of any wedding details. All they know is that they are happy and excited to get married.
