Not that you should need any additional incentive to travel to MinuteMaid this summer – with hopes running high for the ‘Stros this season if even they are off to a slow start – but if you do, there is the dollar hot dog promotion for Wednesday games. The first one was last Wednesday with the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals in town.
The hot dogs for the promotion are surprisingly good; quite tasty, in fact, and a terrific deal, just $1 per hot dog, regular-sized hot dog. I had a few earlier in the season and really enjoyed them immensely: plump, juicy and even beefy. If not exactly at the level of Nathan’s all-beef hot dogs, these are in the ballpark. The buns used are the inexpensive super-processed variety, condiments can run out even during the early innings, and service can be slow, but the dog itself is a worthy of a trip, and even full price. The promotion is “presented by Nolan Ryan Beef,” so presumably, the hot dogs are a Nolan Ryan product.
Nolan Ryan is rather amazing. Not only was he the greatest strikeout pitcher of all time and a big fan favorite during his tenure on the mound with the Astros in the 1980s, he turned out to be a fantastic baseball executive, which former owner Drayton McClane could not seem to fathom. Ryan guided the Texas Rangers – possibly the worst franchise in their long baseball history if you add their tenure with that of their predecessor, the Washington Senators – to one out from a World Series title. Before Ryan returned to Arlington as an executive and built the club, if you wanted Rangers gear as a fan in the Dallas area you had to make it yourself, as there was so little demand for it. And, now Ryan also has a line of well-regarded beef products in supermarkets and the tasty hot dogs at the ballpark.
