Donald Trump is a name that most people recognized prior to the contentious political season. He has been described as bombastic, crude, immoral, un-Christian and much more. His positions have evolved over the years and for some, this makes him a complete phony.
He has said some derogatory things about John McCain, Mexicans, Muslims, Megyn Kelly, Ted Cruz, Carl Rove, Frank Luntz, and last but not least, Rosie O’Donnell. He has used profanity and has attacked every media outlet and pundit that ever disagreed with him.
He is a brash billionaire who is from New York and from a wealthy family. He is very confident, bold and at times appears to be thin skinned. Even the Pope and the President of the United States are warning us not to vote for this man.
How can Donald withstand all of these negative connotations coupled with the media attacks and everyone chanting how evil he is?
Well let me start by pointing out the differences of Trump and all of the others. Is it the fact that he has evolved? That is not the reason people are flocking to him, though it is a characteristic of Ronald Reagan.
Is it because of his wealth? There is really no reason to support him for that reason. It isn’t like he is going to give us his money, though we would not turn it down.
There are a few things that do correlate with the wealth issue. Of all the candidates, Donald is by far the most successful. This gives the voters confidence that this person actually knows about business, employees, balancing a budget etc. In contrast, Rubio is broke and has had issues using credit cards that belong to the RNC. Cruz is not much different as he has taken out loans to support his campaign.
Another issue is that Cruz and Rubio have never created jobs, they have never balanced a business budget, and they have never taken a business risk. This means that Rubio and Cruz were lawyers straight out of law school and have been in politics since then. So Trump’s ability to tout his successes has played a large part in wooing the working men and women in America.
One of the biggest criticisms of Donald trump is that he does not have the tact needed to be president. His critics claim he does not think before he speaks. This is precisely the reason his support is so broad. The American people are looking for straight talk and not poll tested answers. He may say things that he wishes he didn’t say, but so does every other normal person. Politicians rarely say anything wrong and seldom say what they really think for fear of losing votes.
Many criticize trump for the lack of political experience. This is also a big plus for the voters. The voters have elected conservatives and liberals alike for years and both sides feel like their side is colluding with the other team so there are no clear winners and the watered down version of leadership is not working for either party.
And that brings us to one of the most controversial points about “the Donald”. There is no other way to say this with the same bravado. Donald Trump has balls! He does not back up or back down. When he says something, he does not backpedal and try to mitigate what he said. So many supporters may cringe and wish he would have kept that to himself, but they admire the fact that he is not scared to speak his mind.
While all of the reasons above have a great deal to do with Donald winning every demographic, the key to his support is his immigration policy. We can dream about the plans and programs of the future, but until the borders are secure, it is all just a dream. Trumps followers believe that unless the illegal immigration can be stopped, this country will be unrecognizable in just a few short years. This stark realization leaves little else to try other than to do what we did in 2008, 2012 and so on.
Everyone who has a friend or family member without a job or with a low wage job knows how immigration has affected their future job possibilities.
Between the bravado, past success and the ability to speak from the cuff, Donald Trump has captured the hope of many that are just sick of the same old political games and the slow-handed immigration policy. His brand of cocky confidence offends some but may be just what this country needs at this point in time.
